Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran until his death in 2026, officially had a personal net worth of around $50,000. Despite this modest personal wealth, Khamenei oversaw and exercised control over an enormous financial and real estate empire reportedly worth $200 billion, primarily through an organization known as Setad. Some analysts suggest that through Setad, his effective financial influence could have reached $100 billion or more.

    Setad

Setad (Setad Ejraiye Farmane Hazrate Emam, “Headquarters for Executing the Order of the Imam”) was established in 1989, shortly after Khamenei became Supreme Leader. Initially, its goal was to manage properties abandoned after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Over the decades, it expanded into a massive conglomerate with interests in:

    • Real estate
    • Banking and finance
    • Telecommunications
    • Energy
    • Pharmaceuticals

Reuters estimated in 2013 that Setad controlled at least $95 billion in assets. Later analyses, including from U.S. sources, suggest the broader network could be valued near $200 billion.

While these assets were not for personal use, they were effectively under Khamenei’s control, giving him enormous economic power. Setad also played a role in Iran’s healthcare sector, producing the domestic COVID-19 vaccine, COVIran Barekat.

    Early Life and Religious Education

Ali Hosseini Khamenei was born on April 19, 1939, in Mashhad, Iran, to a clerical family of modest means. His father, Sayyid Javad Khamenei, was a mid-ranking religious scholar, and his mother, Khadijeh Mirdamadi, came from a religious family.

Khamenei studied in local seminaries in Mashhad, then trained in Najaf, Iraq, and Qom, Iran, Iran’s premier center for Shiite scholarship. He became a devoted disciple of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, shaping his revolutionary and religious worldview.

    Rise to Power

Khamenei became politically active in the 1960s, opposing Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s regime. He was arrested multiple times by SAVAK, the Shah’s secret police, and spent time in solitary confinement and internal exile.

After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, he rose rapidly in the new power structure:

    • Served on the Revolutionary Council
    • Led Friday prayers in Tehran
    • Held defense-related posts

In 1981, he survived an assassination attempt that left his right arm impaired. Later that year, he was elected Iran’s president, serving two terms during the Iran-Iraq War.

In 1989, following Khomeini’s death, Khamenei became Supreme Leader despite not meeting the traditional clerical rank requirement. The Assembly of Experts amended the constitution to allow his appointment.

    Supreme Leader of Iran

As Supreme Leader, Khamenei held ultimate authority over:

    • Armed forces and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps
    • Judiciary and state media
    • Key foreign policy and nuclear program decisions

His leadership was marked by strict political control, repeated crackdowns on dissent, and ongoing regional influence through proxy groups in countries such as Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen.

Despite promoting personal austerity, Khamenei’s oversight of Setad and related institutions gave him enormous financial leverage in Iran and the region.

    Personal Life

Khamenei married Mansoureh Khojasteh Baqer Zadeh in 1964, and they had six children. His family remained largely private, though one son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was rumored to wield influence behind the scenes.

Throughout his life, Khamenei maintained a public image of religious scholarship and modest living, often wearing simple robes.

    Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Death

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei died on February 28, 2026, at 86 years old, during coordinated U.S. and Israeli military strikes on Iran. His death marked the first time a sitting Supreme Leader died in office since the 1979 revolution and triggered uncertainty over Iran’s future leadership.
