Panic as fishermen find 20 live bombs in Lake Victoria

There was panic when a group of fishermen caught live 20 live bombs in a box in Lake Victoria.

The bombs were found in two separate places, officials said.

The first incident happened on Sunday March 1, 2026 in Mbita area as the group was busy fishing in Litare beach.

The group thought they had caught a huge fish only to realise it was a box with live bombs and an ammunition in a box.

Police were called to the area and took custody of the explosives after the fishermen had brought the box to the shores of the lake.

Police described the explosives as dangerous and urged the locals to always report such discoveries.

On March 2, a similar discovery of 14 bombs were found in Koguna beach as another group of fishermen went on with their mission.

Police said the bombs were the propeland type and had some bullets.

They were later kept in safe custody at the Mbita Subcounty Police Headquarters, awaiting disposal by Bomb Disposal and Hazardous Materials detectives based in Kisumu city.

The fishermen have raised concern over the high number of explosives that have been discovered. Similar discoveries were made in 2021.

In 2019 explosives believed to be from the colonial era were found concealed in an old rusty wooden box in the lake.

Such discoveries are common in the waters, officials said. Police say they have launched a sensitisation campaign to enlighten residents on how to identify explosives and their harmful effects.

Officials have not explained how the bombs found their way to the lake. The fishermen have on several occasions been told to report any such discoveries for their own safety.

The bomb disposal unit team usually destroys the explosives at a safe place in the area.
