Derek Carr is a former American professional football quarterback with an estimated net worth of $80 million. Over the course of his career in the National Football League, Carr became known for his leadership, durability, and strong passing ability.

He was originally selected by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft and spent nine seasons with the franchise before later joining the New Orleans Saints in 2023. Carr earned four Pro Bowl selections and established several franchise records during his time with the Raiders.

On May 10, 2025, Carr announced his retirement from the NFL after battling shoulder injuries, including a labral tear and a degenerative rotator cuff injury in his throwing arm.

    Derek Carr Salary and Contracts

Throughout his NFL career, Derek Carr earned approximately $195 million in total salary and bonuses.

He began his professional career by signing a four-year, $5.37 million rookie contract with the Raiders in 2014.

Carr later secured a major contract extension in 2017, signing a five-year, $125 million deal with the Raiders. The contract briefly made him one of the highest-paid players in the NFL, and in 2018 his total earnings from salary and bonuses reached $42 million.

In April 2022, Carr signed another extension with the Raiders worth three years and $121 million, but he was released before the 2023 season after a difficult finish to his tenure with the team.

Soon after, Carr signed a four-year, $150 million contract with the New Orleans Saints, with $100 million fully guaranteed. If he had continued playing through the deal, his 2026 salary alone would have been $50 million, and his career earnings could have approached $300 million. However, his retirement in 2025 ended that possibility.

    Early Life

Derek Carr was born on March 28, 1991, in Bakersfield, California, to parents Sheryl and Rodger Carr. He is the younger brother of former NFL quarterback David Carr.

In 2002, Carr’s family moved to Sugar Land, Texas, after David Carr was selected by the Houston Texans in the NFL Draft.

Carr attended Clements High School, where he began gaining attention as a quarterback. During his sophomore and junior seasons, he threw for more than 2,800 combined passing yards and 28 touchdowns.

For his senior year, Carr returned to Bakersfield and attended Bakersfield Christian High School. There, he led the Eagles to a 12–1 record and the California Interscholastic Federation Central Section Division V Championship.

    College Football Career

Carr enrolled at California State University, Fresno in 2009, following in the footsteps of his brother David, who had also played quarterback there.

After redshirting in 2010, Carr became the starting quarterback for the Fresno State Bulldogs football in 2011. He finished that season with 3,544 passing yards and 26 touchdowns.

His performance improved dramatically in 2012, when he threw for 4,104 yards and 37 touchdowns, earning Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Carr’s best college season came in 2013, when he recorded 5,083 passing yards and 50 touchdowns, helping Fresno State achieve an 11–2 record and win the Mountain West Conference Championship Game against the Utah State Aggies football. That season, he also won the Sammy Baugh Trophy.

Oakland / Las Vegas Raiders Career

Carr was selected by the Oakland Raiders with the 36th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. After an impressive preseason, he became the first rookie quarterback in franchise history to start a season opener.

He finished his rookie season with 3,270 passing yards and 21 touchdowns. Over the next several seasons, Carr steadily improved and emerged as one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks.

His standout season came in 2016, when he helped lead the Raiders to their first winning season in 14 years and a playoff appearance. Although the team lost to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round, Carr’s performance earned him a Pro Bowl selection.

During his time with the Raiders, Carr broke several franchise records, including career passing yards and touchdown passes.

In 2020, when the franchise relocated to Las Vegas, Carr posted a then-career-high 4,103 passing yards. He surpassed that total in 2021 with 4,804 passing yards, helping the Las Vegas Raiders reach the playoffs before losing to the Cincinnati Bengals.

    New Orleans Saints

In March 2023, Carr signed a four-year contract with the New Orleans Saints, reuniting him with former Raiders head coach Dennis Allen.

However, his time with the Saints was affected by injuries, particularly shoulder issues that limited his performance and ultimately contributed to his decision to retire in 2025.

Despite never winning a playoff game, Carr finished his career with 41,245 passing yards, 257 touchdowns, and a 92.8 passer rating, along with 28 fourth-quarter comebacks.

    Personal Life

Derek Carr married his wife Heather in 2012. The couple has four children: three sons named Deker, Dallas, and Deakon, and a daughter named Brooklyn.
