    Early Life

    Jimmy Jam was born James Samuel Harris III on June 6, 1959, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His father, Cornbread Harris, was a blues and jazz musician. While participating in an Upward Bound program at the University of Minnesota, Jam met Terry Lewis, beginning a musical partnership that would define their careers.

    Flyte Tyme / The Time / The Original 7ven

    In the early 1970s, Jam and Lewis joined the Minneapolis R&B funk band Flyte Tyme, which later became The Time in the 1980s. Jam played keyboards while Lewis played bass.

    • Pandemonium

    In 2011, the band rebranded as The Original 7ven, releasing the album Condensate.

    Start of Producing Career

    While still performing with The Time, Jam & Lewis were introduced to music executives Dina R. Andrews and Clarence Avant. This led to their first production work with the S.O.S. Band, producing the 1983 hit Just Be Good to Me.

    They formed their production company, Flyte Tyme Productions, producing for artists including Alexander O’Neal, Change, and Cherrelle.

    Janet Jackson Collaborations

    One of the most notable collaborations began in 1986 with Janet Jackson on her breakthrough album Control, earning Jam & Lewis the Producer of the Year Grammy Award.

    They continued with:
