Steve Wozniak, the American computer engineer and co-founder of Apple Inc., has an estimated net worth of $10 million.

Despite helping launch one of the world’s most valuable companies, Wozniak is not a billionaire. Instead, he is known for giving away a significant portion of his wealth and prioritising innovation and philanthropy over financial gain. Today, he primarily earns income through public speaking engagements and continues to receive a modest stipend from Apple.

Why Steve Wozniak Isn’t a Billionaire

When Apple Inc. went public in 1980, Wozniak owned about 7.9% of the company, giving him a paper net worth of roughly $142 million at the time.

If he had held onto that stake, it could be worth hundreds of billions of dollars today, potentially making him one of the richest people in the world.

However, Wozniak chose a different path. He gave away large portions of his Apple shares to fellow employees and donated millions to charitable causes—particularly in education. He has also openly stated that he avoids investing and is not motivated by money.

    Early Life

Born and raised in San Jose, Wozniak developed an early passion for electronics. He briefly attended the University of Colorado Boulder before returning to California to continue his studies and work.

While working at Hewlett-Packard, he met Steve Jobs—a partnership that would eventually change the technology industry.

    Founding Apple

In 1976, Wozniak co-founded Apple Inc. with Jobs and Ronald Wayne.

Wozniak designed the Apple I, building the first units by hand, and later created the Apple II, one of the first highly successful mass-produced personal computers. His designs, which included color graphics and expandability, helped spark the personal computer revolution and establish Apple as a major tech company.

    Career After Apple

In 1981, Wozniak survived a plane crash that caused temporary memory loss. Although he returned to Apple for a period, he stepped away from day-to-day operations in 1985 to explore other interests.

He went on to launch several ventures, including:

    • CL 9, which developed an early universal remote control
    • Wheels of Zeus, focused on wireless GPS technology
    • Woz U, a tech education initiative

He has also remained active in technology discussions and innovation projects.

    Philanthropy

Wozniak is widely respected for his philanthropic work, especially in education. He has funded school programs, supported museums, and co-founded the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

He has repeatedly said that wealth was never his goal, explaining that he prefers to focus on happiness, creativity, and helping others rather than accumulating money.

    Recognition

Wozniak’s contributions to computing have earned him numerous honours, including induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

He is also the author of the autobiography iWoz, where he shares insights into his life and Apple’s early days.

    Personal Life

Wozniak lives in Los Gatos. He has been married multiple times and has three children. He also lives with prosopagnosia, a condition commonly known as face blindness.
