Learning how to improve graphics in laptop can help you get better image quality, smoother gaming, clearer videos, and improved performance when using graphic-intensive applications. While a laptop’s graphics capability depends largely on its GPU and other hardware, you can make several software and settings changes to get the best performance from the device. Updating drivers, adjusting display settings, improving cooling, and choosing appropriate graphics settings can make a noticeable difference.

      Update Your Graphics Driver

Graphics drivers allow Windows and applications to communicate properly with your GPU. An outdated driver can cause performance problems, display issues, or compatibility problems with newer games and applications.

Check Windows Update and optional driver updates. If your laptop uses a dedicated NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU, you can also check the manufacturer’s official driver software.

    • Check for Windows updates
    • Install available driver updates
    • Restart the laptop after major updates
    • Keep the GPU driver current
    1. Set Windows to Best Performance

Windows provides a power mode designed to prioritize performance. This can be useful when running games, editing videos, or using demanding graphics applications.

On Windows 11, go to Settings, System, Power & battery, and select Best performance when you need maximum performance. Keep in mind that this can increase power consumption and heat.

    1. Choose the High-Performance GPU

Some laptops have both an integrated GPU and a dedicated GPU. If your laptop has more than one graphics processor, Windows can allow a demanding game or application to use the high-performance GPU.

Go to Settings, System, Display, Graphics, select the application, choose Options, select High performance, and save the setting.

    • Select the game or application
    • Choose High performance
    • Save the graphics preference
    • Restart the application
    1. Adjust the Screen Resolution

Using the recommended display resolution can provide a sharper and more accurate picture. Open Display settings and check the recommended resolution for your laptop’s screen.

For gaming, however, lowering the resolution can sometimes improve frame rates when the GPU is struggling.

    • Use the recommended resolution for normal use
    • Lower resolution when necessary for demanding games
    • Avoid unnecessarily low resolutions for everyday work
    1. Increase the Refresh Rate

If your laptop display supports a higher refresh rate, selecting it can make movement and scrolling appear smoother.

Go to Settings, System, Display, Advanced display, and choose an available refresh rate. The available options depend on your laptop’s display hardware.

A higher refresh rate does not automatically increase the GPU’s performance, but it can improve the visual experience when your hardware can produce enough frames.

    1. Adjust In-Game Graphics Settings

If you mainly want to improve graphics for gaming, adjust individual graphics settings instead of automatically selecting the highest quality.

Lowering demanding options such as shadows, reflections, anti-aliasing, and effects can improve frame rates while allowing you to keep important visual settings at higher quality.

    • Adjust texture quality
    • Reduce shadows if performance is low
    • Adjust anti-aliasing
    • Lower effects when necessary
    • Test changes one at a time
    1. Close Unnecessary Background Programs

Other applications running in the background can consume memory and processor resources. This may reduce the resources available to a game or graphics application.

Use Task Manager to identify programs that are using significant CPU, memory, or other resources and close applications you do not need.

    • Close unnecessary applications
    • Reduce browser tabs
    • Check Task Manager
    • Disable unnecessary startup programs
    1. Keep the Laptop Cool

High temperatures can cause a laptop to reduce performance to protect its components. Keeping air vents clear and using the laptop on a hard, flat surface can improve airflow.

For demanding gaming or editing tasks, a suitable cooling pad may also help some laptops maintain better temperatures.

    • Keep ventilation openings clear
    • Avoid using the laptop on soft surfaces
    • Clean dust from vents carefully
    • Monitor temperatures during heavy workloads
    1. Free Up Storage Space

A laptop with very little free storage can experience general performance problems. Removing unnecessary files and applications can help keep Windows running smoothly.

Windows includes Storage Sense and other cleanup options that can help remove temporary files and free space.

    • Remove unnecessary files
    • Uninstall unused applications
    • Clear temporary files
    • Keep adequate free storage
    1. Upgrade RAM When Possible

Graphics performance can sometimes be affected by limited system memory, particularly when running games, editing software, or several applications simultaneously.

If your laptop allows RAM upgrades, increasing the memory may improve overall system responsiveness. However, it will not turn a weak GPU into a powerful graphics processor.

Check your laptop’s specifications before purchasing RAM because supported memory type and maximum capacity vary between models.

    1. Consider an SSD Upgrade

If your laptop still uses a traditional hard drive, replacing it with a compatible SSD can significantly improve general system responsiveness.

An SSD does not directly increase the processing power of your GPU, but faster storage can improve Windows startup, application loading, and game loading times.

    • Check whether your laptop supports an SSD
    • Choose a compatible drive
    • Back up important files
    • Install the drive correctly
    1. Use HDR If Your Display Supports It

If your laptop has an HDR-capable display, Windows provides HDR settings that can improve the appearance of supported content by expanding brightness and color characteristics.

HDR should only be enabled when your display and content support it. On some laptops, HDR can also affect battery life.

    1. Adjust Color and Display Settings

Windows allows you to adjust display brightness, color profiles, Night light, and HDR settings. Correctly configuring these options can make images and videos appear more suitable for your needs.

For photo or video editing, consider using an appropriate color profile and calibrating the display when accurate colors are important.

    1. Keep Windows Updated

Windows updates can include performance improvements, bug fixes, and optional driver updates. Regularly checking Windows Update can therefore help maintain compatibility and stability.

Go to Settings, Windows Update, and check for available updates. Microsoft also recommends checking optional updates for drivers when available.

    1. Know When a Hardware Upgrade Is Needed

Software settings can optimize the graphics performance your laptop already has, but they cannot overcome major hardware limitations.

If your laptop has an older or entry-level GPU, demanding modern games and professional graphics applications may still perform poorly even after optimization. In some laptops, the GPU cannot be upgraded because it is integrated or permanently attached to the motherboard.

In such cases, upgrading the RAM or SSD may improve general performance, while a newer laptop with a more powerful GPU may be necessary for a substantial graphics improvement.
