Ryan Patrick McDonagh, born on June 13, 1989, in St. Paul, Minnesota, is a professional ice hockey defenseman currently playing for the Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League (NHL).
He serves as an alternate captain for the Lightning and has built a reputation as a reliable, shutdown defenseman known for his strong skating, physical play, and leadership on and off the ice.
McDonagh grew up in the nearby suburb of Arden Hills and developed his passion for hockey in the competitive Minnesota youth system.
He is married to his high school sweetheart, Kaylee, with whom he has three children.

Ryan has two brothers, Colin and Quinn.
Colin is the older brother, while Quinn is the youngest in the family.

Their parents, Sean McDonagh, a local firefighter, and Patty McDonagh, who worked at Ryan’s high school, Cretin-Derham Hall, emphasized hard work, teamwork, and family values.
Career
McDonagh’s hockey career began in Minnesota high school hockey at Cretin-Derham Hall, where he excelled and earned recognition as Mr. Hockey in the state.
He was selected 12th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Instead of turning professional immediately, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, playing three seasons for the Badgers in the WCHA and helping the team compete at a high level while earning academic and athletic honors.
He forwent his senior year to sign with the New York Rangers, making his NHL debut in the 2010-11 season.
With the Rangers, McDonagh quickly established himself as a top-pair defenseman.
He served as team captain from 2014 until 2018, leading the club to the 2014 Stanley Cup Final.
In 2018, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he became a key part of a dominant blue line.
After helping the Lightning reach the playoffs consistently, he was traded to the Nashville Predators in 2022 before returning to Tampa Bay.
Over his career, McDonagh has played more than 1,000 NHL games, known for his consistent defensive contributions, leadership, and ability to log heavy minutes in critical situations.
He has also represented the United States internationally, including at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
Accolades
McDonagh won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021, playing a vital role as a top defenseman on both championship teams.
He was selected to the NHL All-Star Game in 2016 and 2017.
At the college level, he earned WCHA All-Rookie Team honors in 2008 and was named to the WCHA Second All-Star Team in 2010.
