Detectives in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County, have arrested an 18-year-old man suspected of murdering an 84-year-old woman in a brutal attack.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the victim, identified as Florence Khosa, 84, was admitted to Cheranganyi Nursing Home after sustaining serious injuries during the attack.
Despite efforts by medical personnel to save her life, Khosa succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment, according to the DCI.
Following her death, detectives launched a manhunt for the suspect, identified as Ezekiel Nyongesa Barasa, who had reportedly gone into hiding.
The DCI said sustained investigations and police operations eventually led detectives to the suspect, who was traced and arrested.
Barasa was subsequently subjected to an identification parade, where witnesses positively identified him, according to investigators.
As detectives continued with the investigation, another lead emerged allegedly linking the suspect to the killing of an 86-year-old woman in Tongaren, Bungoma County.
Preliminary investigations have also established that the suspect may have sexually assaulted the 84-year-old woman before her death.
Detectives are conducting forensic examinations and pursuing other critical lines of inquiry to reconstruct the events and establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged offences.
“The suspect remains in police custody as detectives piece together evidence ahead of his arraignment,” the DCI said.
