    Shayne Gostisbehere is an American professional ice hockey defenseman who currently plays for the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League (NHL).

    Born on April 20, 1993, in Pembroke Pines, Florida, he stands at 5 feet 11 inches and weighs approximately 183 pounds.

    He shoots left and is known for his offensive capabilities from the blue line, mobility, and nickname “Ghost.”

    Drafted in the third round by the Philadelphia Flyers in 2012, he has built a solid NHL career across multiple teams, including the Flyers, Arizona Coyotes, Detroit Red Wings, and now the Hurricanes.

    Shayne Gostisbehere was born to parents Regis and Christine Gostisbehere.

    His father, originally from the French Basque Country, was a professional jai alai player who moved to Florida before suffering a career-ending eye injury when Shayne was young.

    Shayne has one older sister, Felicia Gostisbehere, who is about four years his senior.

    Felicia was a talented national-level figure skater with Olympic aspirations before a hip injury ended her competitive career at age 15.

    She now works as an emergency room trauma nurse in Fort Myers, Florida.

    Career

    Gostisbehere’s hockey journey began in South Florida, where he played with the minor affiliates of the Florida Panthers.

    He attended Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School before transferring to South Kent School in Connecticut for better hockey development.

    He then played three seasons of college hockey at Union College in the ECAC, helping the Dutchmen capture the 2014 NCAA national championship.

    He was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and was a Hobey Baker Award finalist.

    The Philadelphia Flyers drafted him 78th overall in 2012.

    After turning pro, he made his NHL debut in the 2014-15 season but broke out in 2015-16 as a rookie, recording 17 goals and 46 points in 64 games while setting a rookie defenseman record with a 15-game point streak.

    He spent seven seasons with the Flyers before being traded to the Arizona Coyotes in 2021.

    Subsequent stops included the Detroit Red Wings before signing with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2024.

    Known for his skating and playmaking, Gostisbehere has appeared in over 700 NHL games, contributing consistently on power plays and as a two-way defenseman.

    Accolades

    Gostisbehere’s college accolades include ECAC Hockey Player of the Year, Best Defensive Defenseman, All-ECAC First Team honors, NCAA All-Tournament Team, and NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player.

    In the NHL, he earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team in 2016 and finished as runner-up for the Calder Memorial Trophy.

    With the Flyers, he won the Barry Ashbee Trophy as the team’s best defenseman twice and the Gene Hart Memorial Award for dedication and work ethic.

    He has also received votes for the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman and was named Philadelphia’s Pro Athlete of the Year in 2016.
