Detectives in Mathioya Sub-County, Murang’a County, are investigating a suspected drowning incident after the body of a 58-year-old man was found floating in Mathioya River.

According to the police, the incident was reported on Monday at around 4:15 p.m. by members of the public who had spotted the body while crossing the river.

Police visited the scene and established that the deceased, identified as Francis Mwangi Maina, had been reported missing since Friday, May 1, 2026.

Police said Maina had left his home at around 9:00 a.m. to travel to Kangema town on personal errands but failed to return, prompting concern among family members.

His body was retrieved from the river and moved to Kangema Hospital Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a post-mortem examination.

Authorities have launched investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.

Elsewhere in Masinga, Machakos County, police are investigating the murder of a man whose body was found burnt in a village.

The body was identified as that of Josephat Mutua, 55. The motive of the murder was not immediately known.

Police said they were called and informed of the incident and when they visited the scene they were met with resistance. The locals said they did not want the body to be moved without proper documentation and handling of the scene by experts. The team was not accompanied by crime scene experts. Police said the locals turned hostile and refused to allow the removal of the body in a dramatic move.

This forced the team to retreat and left the body at the scene overnight on Monday.

Another team visited the Munguthe village on Tuesday and managed to retrieve the body to the mortuary for autopsy and other procedures.

No arrest had been made by Tuesday, police said, adding they were investigating the murder which happened on Monday.
