Comedian Erick Omondi was Friday arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) over a protest he staged in Nairobi in connection with high fuel prices.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the arrest of Omondi saying he was under probe.

Omondi had sent messages on his social media saying he had been arrested.

“Just been arrested by a group of 8

Non Uniformed Men. I have no idea where we are headed,” he said.

Following credible intelligence, detectives from DCI Central, working jointly with CRIB Nairobi Region, arrested Omondi in connection with offences committed under the guise of the recent fuel-related protests in Nairobi.

He was detained and was recording his statement at the Nairobi Region DCI Headquarters as he was being processed for arraignment.

The arrest follows ongoing investigations in which several other suspects linked to the same incidents were previously arrested and subsequently arraigned in court on May 18, 2026.

The DCI said it reminds the public that, while the Constitution guarantees the right to assemble, picket, and demonstrate peacefully, these rights must be exercised responsibly and within the confines of the law.

“Any criminal acts committed under the guise of protests, demonstrations, or civic action will be investigated and dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.”

“The DCI will not hesitate to take decisive action against anyone involved in such offences. No matter where you hide, the long arm of the law will catch up with you,” a statement said.

Omondi had on the day of the protests brought heaps of jerricans as he joined others in protest in style.

He arrived with the almost hundred jerricans on a lorry before abandoning them on the road.
