    Early Life

David Gahan was born David Callcott on May 9, 1962, in Epping, Essex, England.

His father left the family when he was still an infant, and he was later raised in Basildon by his mother and stepfather.

Gahan experienced a troubled childhood and frequently found himself in trouble with the law. As a teenager, he appeared in juvenile court several times for offenses including theft, vandalism, and criminal damage. He eventually served weekend custody at an attendance center before turning his attention toward music.

    Depeche Mode Career

In 1980, Gahan joined the electronic band then known as Composition of Sound alongside Martin Gore, Vince Clarke, and Andy Fletcher.

He suggested renaming the group Depeche Mode, inspired by a French fashion magazine.

    • A Broken Frame
    • Construction Time Again

    • Black Celebration
    • Music for the Masses
    • Violator
    • Playing the Angel

Depeche Mode has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and produced dozens of hit singles, becoming one of the most influential electronic bands in music history.

Gahan also evolved into a songwriter, contributing tracks including “Suffer Well,” which earned a Grammy Award nomination and became one of the band’s notable later-era singles.
