    His winning streak ended on June 3, 2019, when he was defeated by contestant Emma Boettcher after winning 32 consecutive games.

    Holzhauer earned $2,464,216 during his original run, making him one of the highest-winning contestants in Jeopardy! history.

    He later added substantially to that total by competing in several special tournaments, including:

    • Tournament of Champions – Winner ($250,000)
    • Greatest of All Time Tournament – Runner-up ($250,000)
    • Jeopardy! Masters – Champion ($500,000)

    These victories pushed his total Jeopardy! earnings to more than $3.46 million.

    James Holzhauer was born on August 6, 1984, in Naperville, Illinois. His father, Juergen Holzhauer, immigrated from Germany and worked as a chemical engineer.

    As a student at Naperville North High School, Holzhauer excelled academically despite often skipping classes and focusing instead on studying sports statistics and probability.

    He also participated in the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering competition, where he earned top honors in physics and mathematics.

    Holzhauer later graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 2005.
