Ewan Philip Fraser Ashman is a professional rugby union player who plays as a hooker for Edinburgh Rugby in the United Rugby Championship and represents the Scotland national team.
Born on 3 April 2000 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to a Scottish father, Jonathan, and an English mother, Carole, he moved to England at around the age of three or four and was raised in Sandbach, Cheshire.
He qualifies for Scotland through his father’s heritage and has represented the country from age-grade levels upward.
Ashman is known for his dynamic ball-carrying, try-scoring ability from the maul and open play, and lineout work.
He attended Sandbach School and began his rugby journey at local club Sandbach RUFC before progressing into professional ranks.
Siblings
Ewan has two siblings, an older brother named Fraser and a twin sister named Emily.
Fraser, who was born in Glasgow, has remained involved with Sandbach RUFC and continues to play for the club.
Emily, like Ewan, was born in Canada.
The family has spoken warmly about supporting Ewan’s career, with parents Jonathan and Carole, along with Fraser, Emily, and Ewan’s girlfriend Caitlin, present for key moments such as his Scotland debut.

Career
Ashman started playing rugby at Sandbach RUFC, initially as a centre or back-row forward before switching to hooker around 2016.
He made his senior debut for the club in the 2017–18 season and joined the Sale Sharks academy in 2017, progressing to their professional squad ahead of the 2018–19 campaign.
He accumulated over 50 appearances for Sale, scoring tries regularly, and had short loan spells, including time at Coventry.
In 2023 he moved to Edinburgh Rugby on a multi-year deal, later extending his contract through to 2030 after strong performances.
At international level he represented Scotland from under-16s onward.
He featured prominently for Scotland Under-20s, including the 2019 World Rugby Under-20 Championship and the 2020 Under-20 Six Nations.
He earned his senior Scotland debut on 7 November 2021 against Australia at Murrayfield, scoring a memorable try in a narrow victory.
He has since become a regular in the squad, featuring in the Six Nations, Autumn Nations Series, and the 2023 Rugby World Cup, and was called up to the British & Irish Lions squad in 2025 as injury cover during their tour.
Accolades
At under-20 level Ashman finished as the top try-scorer at the 2019 World Rugby Under-20 Championship in Argentina with seven tries, becoming the first front-row forward to achieve that feat, and also topped the try-scoring charts in the 2020 Under-20 Six Nations.
For the senior Scotland team he has developed into one of the side’s most prolific try-scoring forwards, reaching notable landmarks including a hat-trick against the USA and multiple braces in Autumn Series matches.
At club level with Edinburgh he has been recognised as the club’s top try-scorer in a standout season, won Scottish Building Society Men’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards, claimed the fan-voted Caullie Lug award for commitment, and earned Player of the Month honours on multiple occasions.
