David Marks is an American guitarist who has an estimated net worth of $1 million. He is best known for his early work with the Beach Boys, joining the group in 1962 and playing on its first four studio albums.

    Early Life

David Marks was born on August 22, 1948, in New Castle, Pennsylvania.

When he was seven years old, his family moved into a house across the street from the Wilson family in Hawthorne, California.

The Wilson household included brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, who would later become founding members of the Beach Boys.

Marks became close to the Wilson brothers and regularly played music with them during Sunday family gatherings.

His interest in guitar developed during his childhood. On Christmas Day in 1958, his parents gave him his first guitar.

That gift would eventually lead to a professional career that connected him with one of America’s most successful rock bands.

David Marks and the Beach Boys

Marks officially joined the Beach Boys in early 1962, replacing Al Jardine, who had temporarily left the group.

At the time, the Beach Boys were beginning to establish themselves nationally following the success of their early recordings.

Marks played on the band’s first four studio albums: Surfin’ Safari in 1962, followed by Surfin’ U.S.A., Surfer Girl and Little Deuce Coupe in 1963.

The albums helped establish the band’s signature Southern California sound and expanded its popularity across the United States.

Marks also performed with the Beach Boys at more than 100 concerts and appeared with the group on national television.

His time with the band, however, came to an end in 1963 following a dispute with Murry Wilson, the band’s manager and father of Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson.

Marks left the Beach Boys in October 1963.

    Return to the Beach Boys

Marks maintained connections with the Beach Boys long after his initial departure.

He briefly reunited with the group for a concert in Boston in 1971 but declined an opportunity to rejoin permanently.

More than two decades later, Marks returned to the Beach Boys in 1997 after Carl Wilson was forced to stop touring because of cancer.

Marks performed approximately 300 shows with the group before leaving again in 1999 after being diagnosed with hepatitis C.

He returned once more in 2011 to participate in recording the Beach Boys album That’s Why God Made the Radio.

In 2012, Marks joined the group for its 50th Anniversary Reunion Tour, which brought several members of the band’s classic lineup together.

He later made occasional appearances with the touring Beach Boys lineup led by Mike Love and Bruce Johnston.

The Beach Boys’ story was also revisited in a 2024 documentary released on Disney+ that featured new and archival interviews.

    The Marksmen

After leaving the Beach Boys for the first time, Marks continued pursuing music.

Toward the end of his first Beach Boys tenure, he became friends with Mark Groseclose, a musician who had replaced him in another group.

Marks eventually took control of the group and renamed it the Marksmen.

After departing the Beach Boys, he secured a recording contract for the Marksmen with A&M Records. The group later signed with Warner Bros. Records.

The Marksmen developed a strong following in California and performed for large crowds. However, the group struggled to receive significant radio exposure.

Much of the band’s recorded material was not released until decades later, with its complete catalog finally becoming available in 2008.

    Other Musical Projects

Following his departure from the Beach Boys, Marks worked with several other musical groups.

During the second half of the 1960s, he performed with Band Without a Name, the Moon and Delaney & Bonnie and Friends.

Eventually, Marks became dissatisfied with the Los Angeles music scene and moved to Boston.

There, he studied jazz and classical guitar at Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music.

His education expanded his musical skills and helped him establish himself as a session guitarist.

Over the following decades, Marks worked with numerous artists, including Daniel Moore, Jim Keltner, Leon Russell, Buzz Clifford and Warren Zevon.

    Solo Career

Marks released his first solo album, Work Tapes, in 1992.

He followed it with Something Funny Goin’ On in 2003 and I Think About You Often in 2006.

His solo work allowed him to explore musical styles outside the Beach Boys’ catalog while continuing his career as a guitarist.

Marks also remained connected to former Beach Boys members through collaborations.

In 2010, he contributed guitar to Al Jardine’s solo album A Postcard from California.

He later played guitar on Brian Wilson’s 2015 solo album No Pier Pressure.

Collaboration With Brian Wilson and Al Jardine

Marks continued collaborating with his former Beach Boys bandmates decades after the band’s early success.

In 2013, he joined Al Jardine, Brian Wilson and guitarist Jeff Beck for a 23-city tour.

The collaboration brought together several musicians associated with the Beach Boys and highlighted the lasting relationships between members of the band’s extended musical family.

Marks later participated in the 2021 album California Music Presents Add Some Music, which featured fellow Beach Boys members and children of members of the original lineup.

    Personal Life

David Marks was previously based in North Salem, New York, with his wife, Carrieann.

In 2013, the couple moved to Southern California.

Marks has largely maintained a private personal life while continuing to work on musical projects and make occasional appearances connected to the Beach Boys.
