Early Life

Shelley Alexis Duvall was born on July 7, 1949, in Fort Worth, Texas. She was the daughter of Robert Duvall, a cattle auctioneer who later became a lawyer, and Bobbie Ruth Crawford, a real estate broker. She had three younger brothers, Scott, Shane and Stewart.

Duvall’s family moved frequently during her early childhood because of her father’s career before eventually settling in Houston when she was five. She developed interests in art and science and was described as an energetic child.

She excelled academically and graduated from Waltrip High School in 1967. She subsequently enrolled at South Texas Junior College, where she studied nutrition and diet therapy. At the same time, she worked selling cosmetics at Foley’s department store.

Acting Career

Duvall’s acting career began unexpectedly in 1970 when she attended a party with her then-husband, artist Bernard Sampson. Director Robert Altman and members of his production team were at the gathering while working in Texas on Brewster McCloud.

Impressed by Duvall’s appearance and personality, members of Altman’s team asked her to audition for the film. Despite having no previous acting experience, she accepted the opportunity and traveled to Hollywood.

Altman subsequently cast Duvall in several of his films, including McCabe & Mrs. Miller in 1971, Thieves Like Us in 1974, Nashville in 1975 and Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull’s History Lesson in 1976.

Her breakthrough came in 1977 when she starred as Millie Lammoreaux in Altman’s psychological drama 3 Women. Duvall improvised many of her lines, and her performance received widespread critical acclaim.

In 1989, Duvall began a relationship with musician Dan Gilroy. The couple lived on a three-acre property in Studio City, California, where they cared for numerous animals.

Duvall later moved away from Los Angeles. She eventually settled in Blanco, Texas, after leaving the Hollywood area.

In a 2021 interview, Duvall discussed the financial difficulties and personal circumstances that contributed to her departure from Los Angeles following the 1994 Northridge earthquake.
