The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has advertised the position of Director General as it seeks to recruit a new head to lead the energy sector regulator.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, EPRA said the successful candidate would provide strategic leadership and direction in line with the Authority’s strategic plan.

The Director General will oversee the technical and economic regulation of energy sector utilities involved in the generation, importation, exportation, transmission, distribution, supply and use of electrical energy.

The successful candidate will also oversee the regulation of petroleum sector activities, including the importation, refining, exportation, transportation, storage and sale of petroleum and petroleum products.

Other responsibilities will include guiding the regulation, monitoring and supervision of upstream petroleum operations and infrastructure in Kenya.

The Director General will further provide oversight in the regulation of the production, conversion, distribution, supply, marketing and use of renewable energy, including solar, wind, geothermal, bioenergy, tidal and hydropower.

EPRA said the successful candidate will also be expected to foster a culture of good governance within the Authority and ensure proper internal monitoring and control systems.

According to EPRA, applicants must be Kenyan citizens and hold a Bachelor’s degree from a university recognised in Kenya, or its equivalent, in engineering, physical sciences, law, finance, environmental studies, economics or energy.

Candidates must have at least seven years of management experience at a senior level, including at least two years of experience in the petroleum and energy sector.

Applicants must also possess a relevant professional qualification and membership in a professional body in good standing.

They must meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution on leadership and integrity.

EPRA said a Master’s degree from a recognised university in engineering, physical sciences, law, finance, economics, environmental studies, energy or a related field will be an added advantage.

The appointment will be for a three-year contractual term, renewable once for a similar period subject to satisfactory performance and the mandatory retirement age.

A detailed job description and additional requirements are available on the EPRA website.

Interested and qualified candidates are required to submit their applications, together with copies of relevant certificates, through dgrecruitment2026@epra.go.ke.

Applications must reach EPRA not later than 5 p.m. on September 9, 2026.

The recruitment comes after changes at the top of the energy regulator.

Dr. Eng. Joseph Oketch is currently serving as the Acting Director General of EPRA after stepping into the position following the resignation of former Director General Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria in April 2026.
