Claudia Kohde-Kilsch is a former professional German tennis player born on 11 December 1963 in Saarbrücken, West Germany.
She turned professional in 1980 and retired in the mid-1990s after a successful career on the WTA Tour.
Kohde-Kilsch later became involved in politics, journalism, coaching, including roles with the German Tennis Federation focused on talent development and wheelchair tennis, and other activities.
She adopted the hyphenated surname Kohde-Kilsch from her adoptive father, Jürgen Kilsch, an attorney who became part of the family when she was about five years old.
Kohde-Kilsch formally took the name at age 18 in 1982 after her biological father, Hermann Kohde, had not consented to an earlier adoption.
Siblings
Claudia has a younger sister named Katrin.
Katrin was regarded as one of the promising tennis talents in German tennis circles, reflecting the sporting background of the family.
Career
Kohde-Kilsch won Saarland and German youth titles as well as a youth European championship before turning professional.
In singles, she compiled a career record of roughly 408-224.

She won eight WTA singles titles, including the 1981 events in Gstaad, the Austrian Open and Toronto, the 1982 Pittsburgh tournament, the 1984 German Open, the 1985 Los Angeles tournament, the 1988 Birmingham tournament and the 1990 Austrian Open.
Kohde-Kilsch reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 4 on 2 September 1985.
She reached four Grand Slam singles semifinals and remained in the top 10 for several years. She often competed in the shadow of compatriot Steffi Graf later in the decade.
Kohde-Kilsch reached a career-high doubles ranking of No. 3 in August 1987. Her most productive partnership was with Helena Suková.
The pair, sometimes nicknamed the Twin Towers because of their height, captured the 1985 US Open and 1987 Wimbledon titles among many others.
She also partnered successfully with players such as Eva Pfaff, Bettina Bunge and Hana Mandlíková.
Representing West Germany and later Germany, she played Fed Cup from 1982 to 1989. She was part of the victorious West German Fed Cup team in 1987.
At the 1988 Seoul Olympics, she and Steffi Graf won the bronze medal in women’s doubles.
Injuries and declining motivation led her to step away from the main tour in the mid-1990s.
Accolades
Among her principal achievements are two Grand Slam women’s doubles titles, winning the 1985 US Open and 1987 Wimbledon with Helena Suková.
She also won an Olympic bronze medal in women’s doubles with Steffi Graf at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
She was part of Germany’s first Fed Cup-winning team in 1987. Kohde-Kilsch reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 4 and a doubles ranking of No. 3.
She collected eight WTA singles titles and 25 WTA doubles titles. She was named German Tennis Player of the Year in 1985.
She finished second in the German Sportswoman of the Year voting in 1985. She was also named Saarland Sportswoman of the Year in 1979.
Additional honours include the American Tennis Magazine Rookie of the Year award in 1982. She received a lifetime achievement recognition from Saarland sports journalists in 2004.
