Sam Smith is a Grammy-winning British singer-songwriter who has an estimated net worth of $45 million.

Smith built their fortune through music sales, streaming royalties, songwriting, record deals, international tours and collaborations with some of the biggest names in the music industry.

They first attracted widespread attention in 2012 after appearing on Disclosure’s hit single “Latch.” A year later, Smith featured on Naughty Boy’s chart-topping song “La La La,” which reached No. 1 in the UK.

However, Smith’s major breakthrough came in 2014 with the release of their debut studio album, In the Lonely Hour. The album became a global success and produced some of their best-known songs, including “Stay with Me,” “I’m Not the Only One” and “Lay Me Down.”

Smith’s career has since included multiple successful albums, international tours, major awards and high-profile collaborations. Their 2015 James Bond theme “Writing’s on the Wall” also won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe.

    Early Life

Samuel Frederick Smith was born on May 19, 1992, in London, England.

They are the child of Frederick Smith and Kate Cassidy. Smith developed an interest in music at a young age and became involved with Youth Music Theatre UK, appearing in several productions.

Smith also studied singing and songwriting with musician Joanna Eden for several years.

They attended St Mary’s Catholic School in Bishop’s Stortford, where they continued developing their musical abilities.

Before becoming internationally famous, Smith independently released songs including “Bad Day All Week” and “When It’s Alright.”

    Breakthrough With Disclosure

Smith’s first major exposure came in 2012 when they provided vocals for Disclosure’s single “Latch.”

The song became a major success in the UK, reaching No. 11 on the UK Singles Chart. Its popularity introduced Smith to a much wider audience and helped launch their professional recording career.

In 2013, Smith released “Lay Me Down,” which would later appear on their debut album.

That same year, they collaborated with Naughty Boy on “La La La.” The song became a No. 1 hit on the UK Singles Chart and further established Smith as one of Britain’s most promising new vocalists.

    In the Lonely Hour

Smith’s biggest early breakthrough came in May 2014 with the release of “In the Lonely Hour.”

Released through Capitol Records, the album reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 2 on the US Billboard 200.

It became one of the biggest-selling albums of 2014 and established Smith as an international superstar.

The album included “Stay with Me,” which became one of Smith’s signature songs. Other successful singles included “I’m Not the Only One” and “Lay Me Down.”

Smith subsequently embarked on their first major American tour and made appearances on programs including Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and Saturday Night Live.

    Grammy Awards and Global Success

Smith’s success reached another level at the 2015 Grammy Awards.

They won four Grammys, including Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.

The awards recognized both Smith’s performance of “Stay with Me” and the success of In the Lonely Hour.

Smith also won two Brit Awards in 2015, including British Breakthrough Act and Global Success.

The awards established Smith as one of the leading British recording artists of their generation.

James Bond and Writing’s on the Wall

One of Smith’s most important career opportunities came in 2015 when they recorded “Writing’s on the Wall” for the James Bond movie Spectre.

The song was co-written with Jimmy Napes and became the first James Bond theme to reach No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart.

It also brought Smith two of the industry’s most prestigious awards.

In 2016, “Writing’s on the Wall” won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

The success added another major achievement to Smith’s growing career and increased their international profile.

    The Thrill of It All

After taking time away from releasing new music, Smith returned in 2017 with “Too Good at Goodbyes.”

The single debuted at No. 1 in the UK and reached No. 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

It was followed by Smith’s second studio album, “The Thrill of It All,” in November 2017.

The album debuted at No. 1 in both the United States and the United Kingdom, giving Smith their first US No. 1 album.

To promote the record, Smith embarked on The Thrill of It All Tour in 2018.

The worldwide tour included performances across Europe, North America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, creating another major source of income for the singer.

    Collaborations and Later Music

Smith continued expanding their catalogue through collaborations with other major artists.

In 2018, they worked with rapper Logic on “Pray” and contributed “Fire on Fire” to the Watership Down soundtrack.

They also appeared as the lead vocalist on Calvin Harris’ “Promises.”

In 2019, Smith collaborated with Normani on “Dancing with a Stranger.”

The song became a global hit, reaching the top 10 in the US, UK and several other markets.

Smith followed it with “How Do You Sleep?” later that year.

In 2020, Smith released their third studio album, “Love Goes,” after its original release schedule was delayed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The album included collaborations and songs such as “I’m Ready,” featuring Demi Lovato, and Smith’s cover of Coldplay’s “Fix You.”

    Unholy With Kim Petras

Another major chapter in Smith’s career came in 2022 with “Unholy,” a collaboration with Kim Petras.

The song became a worldwide hit and topped the Billboard Hot 100.

It also reached No. 1 in numerous countries and earned multiple certifications around the world.

At the 2023 Grammy Awards, Smith and Petras won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Unholy.”

The victory was particularly significant because Petras became the first openly transgender woman to win a Grammy in a major category.

For Smith, “Unholy” represented another enormous commercial success and added to the value of their music catalogue.

    Personal Life

Smith publicly came out as gay in 2014.

They were previously romantically linked to actor Jonathan Zeizel and actor Brandon Flynn.

In 2017, Smith described themselves as genderqueer. In 2019, they announced that they identified as nonbinary and use they/them pronouns.

Smith has also spoken publicly about the influence of artists including Adele, Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Chaka Khan, Brandy and Lady Gaga.

They are related to British singer Lily Allen and actor Alfie Allen, who are their third cousins.

    Sam Smith’s Hampstead Mansion

Smith has also invested some of their wealth in real estate.

In September 2019, they reportedly paid $15 million for a Grade II-listed mansion in Hampstead, one of London’s affluent northern suburbs.

The property became one of the most visible examples of the wealth Smith accumulated after becoming an international music star.
