The Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation has announced internship opportunities for young graduates under the Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience Project (HoAGW4RP).
The programme is being funded through the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank and will provide graduates with an opportunity to gain practical experience in their areas of specialisation.
In a notice issued on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the ministry said the Government of Kenya had secured funding from the IDA of the World Bank to implement the HoAGW4RP.
The project seeks to improve access to groundwater and promote its sustainable management in the Horn of Africa borderlands.
The ministry said part of the project funding would support an internship programme during the 2026/2027 financial year.
The programme is being implemented under Component 2A of the project, which focuses on generating groundwater information and strengthening regional and national groundwater institutions.
The ministry said the internship programme is one of the capacity-building initiatives under the component.
The second cohort will comprise 65 interns and is expected to begin in January 2027, during the third quarter of the 2026/2027 financial year.
The internship will run for 12 months and will not be renewable.
The programme is coordinated by the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation and managed by the Regional Centre on Groundwater Resources (RCGW).
The ministry said the enrolment, remuneration, monitoring and evaluation of interns would be conducted in accordance with the relevant government guidelines.
The internship programme is open to young graduates with bachelor’s degrees in several disciplines.
Eligible fields include geology, hydrogeology, environmental science, natural resources management and civil engineering, particularly the water option.
Other eligible fields include sociology and gender development studies, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), ICT and communication, data science, chemistry, hydrometeorology, climate analysis, hydrology, economics, finance and other water-related engineering courses.
The programme is designed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical work experience by placing graduates in real-world work environments.
“Interns will be deployed to different agencies and counties implementing the HoAGW4R Project, referred to as the workstation where they can apply their academic knowledge and gain valuable insights,” the ministry said.
The interns may also participate in field assignments during the implementation of project activities in the five counties targeted under the project.
Applicants must be aged between 25 and 35 years.
They must have completed and obtained a relevant bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution of higher education.
Applicants must also have graduated no more than two years before the date of the advertisement.
The ministry said applicants must not have benefited from another internship programme funded by the Government of Kenya.
They must also not have had formal employment in their area of specialisation after graduation.
Selected interns will be assigned duties by their supervisors or mentors and will be expected to document the skills they acquire during the programme.
They will also participate in mentorship activities and other responsibilities assigned under the programme.
Interns will be required to participate in quarterly monitoring and evaluation exercises and remain ready for deployment to relevant offices or workstations within institutions implementing the HoAGW4R project.
They will also be expected to comply with the rules and regulations of the public institutions where they are posted.
The ministry said interns would be expected to acquire relevant skills in their areas of specialisation while maintaining confidentiality and safeguarding tools and equipment entrusted to them.
They will also be required to obtain clearance from the relevant authority before leaving their internship stations.
Successful interns will receive a monthly stipend in accordance with prevailing government guidelines on the management of the Public Service Internship Programme.
The ministry said the stipend would be guided by the Public Service Internship Programme Guidelines of October 2019, the Internship Policy and Guidelines for the Public Service of May 2016, as well as other applicable government circulars, policies and directives.
Interns who successfully complete the programme will receive certificates.
Interested candidates are required to submit the official internship programme application form together with a cover letter, a copy of their national identification card, curriculum vitae, relevant academic certificates and other supporting documents.
