The @ symbol is commonly used in email addresses, social media usernames and online forms. However, finding the correct key combination can sometimes be confusing because laptop keyboards have different layouts. Learning how to press @ on laptop keyboard can help you type email addresses and other information more easily. The method you use depends mainly on your keyboard layout and operating system.

    1. Table of Contents

      • Use Shift and the @ Key
      • Try Shift + 2
      • Try the Alternative Keyboard Combination
      • Check Your Keyboard Language
      • Use the On-Screen Keyboard
      • Copy and Paste the @ Symbol
      • Check Whether the Shift Key Works
      • Check Your Laptop Keyboard Layout
      • Use @ in an Email Address
      • Test the Keyboard in a Text Field

Use Shift and the @ Key

On many laptop keyboards, the @ symbol is printed on the same key as another character.

To type it, hold down the Shift key and press the key marked with @.

For example, if the @ symbol appears above the number 2, press Shift + 2.

    • Hold Shift
    • Press the key containing @
    • Release both keys
    • Check that @ appears on the screen
    1. Try Shift + 2

On many US and other common keyboard layouts, the @ symbol is located above the number 2.

Press Shift + 2 to produce the @ symbol.

If this does not work, your laptop may be using a different keyboard layout.

    1. Try the Alternative Keyboard Combination

On some UK keyboard layouts, the @ symbol may be located on a different key.

Try pressing Shift together with the key that has the @ symbol printed on it. On many UK layouts, this is the key next to the letter L.

The important thing is to look at the symbols printed on your physical keyboard rather than assuming that every laptop uses the same layout.

    1. Check Your Keyboard Language

If the symbols you type do not match the symbols printed on your keyboard, your computer may be using a different keyboard language or layout.

On Windows, you can check the selected keyboard language from the language settings or the language indicator on the taskbar.

Switching to the correct keyboard layout can make the @ key work as expected.

    • Check the language indicator
    • Open keyboard language settings
    • Select the appropriate keyboard layout
    • Try typing @ again
    1. Use the On-Screen Keyboard

If you cannot find the correct combination, Windows has an on-screen keyboard that can show the available keys.

Search for On-Screen Keyboard from the Windows Start menu and open it.

You can then use the virtual keyboard to locate the @ symbol and select it.

    1. Copy and Paste the @ Symbol

If your physical keyboard is not working correctly, you can copy the symbol from another location.

    Here is the symbol: @

Select it, copy it using Ctrl + C, and paste it where you need it using Ctrl + V.

This is useful as a temporary solution when you are unable to type the symbol directly.

    1. Check Whether the Shift Key Works

If pressing Shift + 2 or another combination does not produce the expected symbol, check whether your Shift key is working.

Try using the other Shift key on your laptop. You can also test it by typing another capital letter.

If one Shift key works and the other does not, the problem may be with the keyboard rather than the @ symbol.

    1. Check Your Laptop Keyboard Layout

Different countries use different keyboard layouts, so the position of the @ symbol can vary.

Look closely at your keyboard to see where the @ symbol is printed. The correct shortcut is normally Shift plus the key that displays @.

If the printed symbols do not match what appears on your screen, check your computer’s keyboard layout settings.

    1. Use @ in an Email Address

The @ symbol is essential when typing an email address.

For example, an email address may appear as:

    name@example.com

The symbol separates the username from the email service’s domain name.

Make sure you type the symbol correctly when completing online forms or signing into an account.

    1. Test the Keyboard in a Text Field

If you are unsure whether the shortcut is working, open a simple text application such as Notepad.

Try the different keyboard combinations there instead of entering them directly into an important form.

This allows you to test the keyboard without accidentally entering incorrect information.
