The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has given illegal roadside occupants, including traders and owners of unauthorised structures, 30 days to vacate road reserves along four major roads.
KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli said in a notice issued on Tuesday that the directive affects occupants along the Likoni-Ukunda-Lunga Lunga (A7) Road, Kilifi-Malindi-Garsen-Witu (A7) Road, Maili Tisa-Kitale (B14) Road and Eldoret-Nyaru (B124) Road.
The affected traders and other occupants have been directed to remove their goods, structures and any other forms of encroachment from the road reserves within 30 days from the date of the notice.
Kimeli said the directive would pave the way for planned service road improvements, construction of bus bays and drainage rehabilitation works along the affected roads.
The projects form part of ongoing performance-based maintenance and road safety enhancement works aimed at improving safety, visibility and reducing traffic congestion.
“All affected occupants are, therefore, required, through this Notice, to remove their goods, structures, and any other encroachments from the road reserve within thirty (30) days from the date of this Notice,” Kimeli said.
KeNHA said the deadline for compliance is Thursday, October 29, 2026.
The authority warned that any structures or goods remaining within the affected sections of the road reserves after the expiry of the 30-day period will be removed without further reference to the owners.
According to KeNHA, the removal will be carried out in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations governing the protection and management of road reserves.
The authority further said the cost of removing the structures and goods will be borne by their owners.
