Changing your WiFi password can help improve the security of your home or office network and prevent people you do not recognize from connecting to your internet. The process usually involves accessing your router’s settings through a web browser or mobile app. Learning how to change WiFi password can also be useful when you want to replace an old password or make your network easier to manage.

      • Enter a New WiFi Password
      • Choose the Correct Security Setting
      • Save the New Password
      • Reconnect Your Devices
      • Update the Password in Your Router App
      • Keep Your New Password Secure
      • Check Your Connected Devices
      • Contact Your Internet Provider if Necessary

      Connect to Your WiFi Network

Start by connecting your phone, computer, or tablet to the WiFi network whose password you want to change.

You can also connect your computer directly to the router using an Ethernet cable if available.

    • Connect to the correct WiFi network
    • Check that your internet connection is working
    • Keep the router powered on
    1. Find Your Router’s Login Address

Most routers have a local address that you can enter into a web browser to access the administration page.

Common router addresses include 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, although your router may use a different address.

    • Check the router label
    • Look at the router manual
    • Check your network settings if necessary
    1. Open the Router Settings

Open a web browser and enter your router’s administration address in the address bar.

You should see a login page requesting the router’s administrator username and password.

    • Open Chrome, Edge, Safari, or another browser
    • Enter the router’s local address
    • Log in with the administrator credentials
    1. Find the WiFi Settings

After logging in, look for a section labelled Wireless, WiFi, WLAN, Wireless Settings, or something similar.

The exact wording depends on your router manufacturer and model.

    • Open the wireless settings
    • Find the security section
    • Locate the current WiFi password
    1. Enter a New WiFi Password

Find the field containing your current wireless password and replace it with your new password.

Choose a password that is difficult for others to guess but easy for you to store securely.

    • Use a reasonably long password
    • Combine different types of characters where appropriate
    • Avoid obvious information such as your name or phone number
    1. Choose the Correct Security Setting

If your router provides a security option, use a modern standard such as WPA2 or WPA3 where supported.

Avoid outdated security methods when your router offers stronger alternatives.

    • Select WPA3 when supported
    • WPA2 is widely supported by older devices
    • Avoid outdated security standards
    1. Save the New Password

After entering the new password, select Apply, Save, or a similar option.

The router may restart its wireless connection after the change.

    • Check the new password carefully
    • Save the settings
    • Wait for the WiFi network to restart
    1. Reconnect Your Devices

Changing the WiFi password will usually disconnect devices that were using the old password.

You will need to enter the new password on phones, computers, smart TVs, printers, and other connected devices.

    • Open WiFi settings on each device
    • Select your network
    • Enter the new password
    • Confirm the connection
    1. Update the Password in Your Router App

Some modern routers allow you to manage WiFi settings through a dedicated mobile application.

If your router uses an app, you may be able to change the password without accessing the router through a browser.

    • Open the router’s official app
    • Sign in to your router account
    • Find WiFi settings
    • Update and save the password
    1. Keep Your New Password Secure

After changing the password, avoid sharing it unnecessarily.

Store it somewhere secure so you do not have to reset the password simply because you cannot remember it.

    • Do not post the password publicly
    • Share it only with trusted people
    • Store it securely
    1. Check Your Connected Devices

After changing the password, check your router’s connected-device list if the feature is available.

This can help you confirm which devices have successfully reconnected to your network.

    • Review connected devices
    • Identify unfamiliar devices
    • Remove or block unauthorized devices where your router allows it
    1. Contact Your Internet Provider if Necessary

Some internet providers supply routers with customized settings or manage certain network features remotely.

If you cannot access the WiFi settings, contact your internet provider or check the instructions provided with the router.

    • Contact customer support
    • Provide your router details
    • Follow the provider’s instructions
