Jamii Telecoms (JTL) owner Joshua Chepkwony has come out strongly to support Safaricom’s dominance in the Kenyan telecoms market, accusing the proponents of break up of the giant telco as being for the punishment of success.
Appearing before parliamentary committee investigating how he acquired his 4G license, Joshua Chepkwony and other Jamii Telecoms employees claimed that JTL paid Ksh 2.5 billion for the license and not the Ksh 100,000 being alleged in the industry.
Chepkwony proposed that other smaller players be incentivised and national roaming be allowed to enable the small players compete effectively and not break Safaricom.
JTL has also faced accusations of bribery and using unorthodox methods to block new or smaller players from accessing the fixed internet market which it dominates.
JTL launched a 4G enabled mobile network which operates in the 700MHz frequency.
