Police arrested five people following an alleged robbery involving members of Ruaraka Member of Parliament (MP) T.J. Kajwang’s team during a public engagement tour in Mathare, Nairobi, on Thursday afternoon.

The MP had to be evacuated after the mob blocked his way, demanding money, police said.

The incident occurred at around 2:35 p.m. on September 17, 2026, after the MP commissioned the perimeter wall at Utalii Police Station and visited Heidemary Primary School in Mathare 4A.

According to police, Kajwang was leaving the area on foot when he reached Mathare Area 4, Stage 29/30, where a group of approximately 100 youths reportedly became rowdy and demanded tokens.

The youths allegedly surrounded the MP’s secretary, and stole a bag containing Sh80,000, a wallet with Sh7,000 and her national identity card.

Another woman, was allegedly robbed of a Samsung S3 Ultra phone valued at Sh130,000.

Police officers managed to evacuate the MP safely from the area. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

The suspects were reportedly positively identified by the complainants. Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Such incidents where mobs block ways while demanding money and other valuables have been on the rise and are attributed to goonism. Police say they are pursuing all those linked to the incidents for justice.

Last week, a bodyguard attached to President William Ruto’s aide Faruk Kibet was blocked by a mob that demanded cash in Lugari, Kakamega County. At least 31 people were later arrested over the drama.

A similar incident happened on the First Lady Rachael Ruto in Siaya after a mob blocked her way from an event.

At least 12 people were arrested over the drama.

Meanwhile, a 50-year-old watchman was seriously injured after a gang armed with a rifle and machetes raided a leaching site in Nyatechi Village, Kuria West, Migori County, early Friday morning.

The incident occurred at around 1:50 a.m. on September 18, 2026, police said.

The gang comprised eight men, one armed with a rifle while the others carried pangas. They allegedly invaded the leaching site, with the intention of committing a robbery.

The watchmen reportedly detected the gang’s movement and raised an alarm. In response, the gunman allegedly fired several shots.

One of the watchmen, was accosted by the attackers and slashed on the head and upper left arm with a panga.

The suspects reportedly fled on two motorcycles whose registration numbers were not captured.

The police officers evacuated Kimori to Oasis Hospital in Kehancha Township, where he received first aid for deep cuts and heavy bleeding. He was later referred to Migori Life Care Hospital in critical condition.

Police have launched investigations to identify and apprehend the suspects.
