“My heart is broken. I am so lucky to have lived the adventure of loving this incredible man for 38 years, he passed the way he lived, on his own terms, surrounded by the people he loved, in the place he loved best.” his wife Cindy wrote.
Former President Barrack Obama remembered him as a man from a different generation, background but one who he got to compete the highest level of politics with.
“But we shared, for all our differences, a fidelity to something higher — the ideals for which generations of Americans and immigrants alike have fought, marched and sacrificed.” Obama said in a statement. “We are all in his debt.”
Senator McCain is remembered for his dramatic vote against the Trump-backed bill that would have repealed the Obamacare healthcare law.
Despite his longstanding rift with President Donald Trump, the leader has sent his sent his “deepest sympathies and respect” to the family.
