The judiciary has revealed that Chief Justice David Maraga is yet to occupy the palatial Runda home that cost the taxpayers Ksh310 million.

Speaking to Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Anne Amadi, on Wednesday revealed that the residence is not in a habitable state and requires some repairs before it is occupied.

Ms Amadi was put to task to explain why the posh home is lying idle by the members of the committee chaired by William Cheptumo.

“We spent money to buy a house in Runda and up to now nobody is occupying the house,” exclaimed nominated MP Jennifer Shamala.

The house was acquired in 2013 as the official residence of the Chief Justice.

The residence is stated to have been bought from former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama.

Ms Amadi added that the house has also been subject of protracted legal battles, with the last case on the facility having been withdrawn last year.

Neither Chief Justice David Maraga nor his predecessor Willy Mutunga has lived in the residence, with Justice Maraga currently residing in his Karen home.

Upon its purchase, the house was caught up in procurement issues with the Auditor General noting that the Judiciary did not follow the laid out procedures for purchase.

Following the tussles, six judiciary officials including the then registrar Gladys Shollei, were fired over the alleged irregularities.
