Election is nearing. This is where journalists are so busy meeting political and business leaders as they prepare their forte for the eventuality after the elections. Blogging is also growing in Kenya and when you are a blogger, you are definitely a journalist. You would want a professional recorder to conduct interviews with industry leaders. These devices are also handy when you want to keep track of what the lecturer is saying. You can record the whole session and replay it later.

Bloggers are very innovative. They will quickly turn their phone into a recorder or simply use their computers with a professional recording software. But for portability and added features, you need to invest in a professional recorder. We found some in Nairobi which you can invest in.

    Tascam DR-08

Tascam is the undisputed leader of the DVRs. The Dr-08 is very compact for carrying around and can record high-quality WAV or MP3 files at rates up to 24-bit/96kHz. It has a Micro-SD card slot with 2G card packed but you can expand the memory to the size you like.

The recorder features a built-in stereo electret condenser microphone with an automatic level control and switchable low cut filter. The mic also features a unique mechanism that allows you to change the position of the elements to tailor the acoustic properties of the recording. A 3.5mm stereo mic/line input makes it easy to connect an external microphone or instrument, while the 3.5mm headphone/line output jack allows you to connect headphones, external speakers, a mixer, and more. The high-speed USB 2.0 port allows you to transfer your recordings to a Mac or PC for editing or sharing.

This device goes for Ksh 30,000

    Sony ICD-MX20

Sony is not giving up on this field. Just like in the cameras is served the non and semi professional well, this device wont disappoint. Its memory uses the high capacity IC chip and features the advanced voice operated ddigital recording. The expandable memory stick is the Pro Duo stick.

The device goes for Ksh 30,000.

    Edirol R-09HR

The device comes with a high grade and high stereo condenser mic built into it. Has a wireless remote controller and a preview speaker. The quality of the brand is high and it is not one to be taken lightly. It goes for around Ksh 45,000 in Nairobi.

    Teac VR-10

This DVR is extremely compact, records both WAV and MP3 at 25 bit/48kHz, uses 2 AAA batts and has a USB connection port. It comes with a 2GB card in most cases. Goes for around Ksh 25,000.

    Tascam DR-2D

TASCAM’s DR-2d Portable Digital Recorder brings high-resolution recording to a compact, affordable package. It offers up to 96kHz/24-bit WAV or MP3 recording to SD cards, and recordings can be transferred to computer through high-speed USB 2.0. It goes for Ksh 35,000 in Nairobi.

    Zoom H2 Handy

The H2 has dual stereo mics facing front and rear. This is ideal for capturing a wide sorround sound. There are two sets of mics – one pair facing the front and one pair facing the rear – allowing you to record at 90° from the front or 120° from the rear. You can also use both two pairs to produce a four-channel recording with 360° coverage. After recording, the built-in 3D panning function gives you full control over the balancing. Or use commonly available authoring software to create 5.1 surround recordings. No other portable digital recorder has this ability. Goes for around Ksh 50,000

    Marantz PMD661

The Marantz PMD661 is dark and sleek and feels solid in the hand. It’s about the size of a VHS cassette (3.5 x 1.5 x 6.5 inches), not quite pocket-sized. The faceplate of the PMD661 is metal. The case is a matte-finish, high-impact ABS plastic. The PMD661’s OLED display screen is gloriously large and spectacularly clear and bright. It is the most legible portable recorder display screen we have seen. The record function buttons are large and squishy. The menu navigation buttons are small and squishy. The playback function buttons are crisp and precise. All are very responsive. Goes for Ksh 55,000

    Zoom H4 Next

Whether you’re recording a live performance, a podcast, a class or workshop, a rehearsal, a songwriting session or even a sizzling performance of your band, the H4 has more recording tools available than any device ever made. Weighing just 190g, the H4 puts a remarkable amount of recording power in the palm of your hand. It also goes for Ksh 55,000.
