Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has raised alarm over irrelevant university courses offered in Kenya.

Speaking on Monday during the release of 2019/2020 universities and colleges student placement results, the CS noted that over 100 university courses did not enroll any candidate.

He ordered the review of the university curriculum to do away with such courses, adding that  universities must be market oriented.

“I might be forced to shut some public universities this year and send some lecturers home. We cannot continue having irrelevant courses in our institutions that no single student has chosen for years,” Magoha said during an event by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service.

At the same time, KUCCPS CEO John Muraguri noted that a total of 1,269 students qualified for degree courses (C+ and above) but applied for diploma courses and were placed based on their choices.

This year a total of 89,486 students were placed to degree programmes in public and private universities.

Further, a total of 98,393 applicants were selected to join Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions.

TVET programmes include diploma courses, craft certificate and artisan certificate.

According to Muraguli all selected students will be notified of their courses and institutions through direct SMS and through KUCCPS student’s portal.

For those students who wish to transfer their placements, KUCCPS boss said they will be free to do so from May 1, 2019.
