A children’s court in Mombasa has ordered former Lamu West MP Julius Ndegwa to clear rent arrears amounting to Sh140,000 to avert eviction of alleged family from a rented apartment in Nyali.

The Tononoka children’s court issued the orders after a woman claiming to be the wife to the former legislator filed a complaint at the court.

According to the woman identified as Susan Maalim Ndegwa, whom she sired a kid with, had abandoned the family for five months, leading to the huge debt.

Ms Maalim told the court that auctioneers were threatening to evict her and sell her property.

She pleaded for quick intervention saying her family would be rendered destitute if the court failed to compel the respondent to clear the debt.

Senior Resident Magistrate Lucy Sindani ordered Ndegwa to clear the amount pending the hearing and determination of the application.

“The respondent is hereby compelled to clear the rent arrears as required by the landlord of the premise where the applicant and her child reside,” Sindani said.

Ms Maalim claimed she first met Ndegwa in 2014 in Lamu.

Thereafter, their love blossomed resulting to the birth of their daughter.

“The respondent and I initially were residents of Lamu where we first met but sometimes in 2017 I relocated to Mombasa where I opened a business,” she said.

Reports indicate Ndegwa has not filed a response to the accusations.

The hearings are set for May 20.
