Kenyan avocados are now allowed in the Chinese market, the state has announced.

This follows a trade deal reached between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

The deal makes Kenya the first African nation to export the produce to the Asian market.

According to the government statement, once the agreement is fully implemented the Chinese market is expected to absorb over 40 percent of the country’s avocado produce.

It becomes Kenya’s largest second export in the horticultural sector after stevia.

However, the statement was silent on the Sh368 billion loan President Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga are expected to secure for further development of the standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

Speaking in Kisumu on Saturday, Odinga, who is also in China, indicated that the loan will help revive the Kisumu inland port which for a long while now it had been dormant due to the dilapidated railway.

“The new SGR line will extend from Naivasha to Narok, Bomet, Sondu and finally Kisumu,” he said.

Odinga, who until recently was a fierce critic of the SGR loan, was bashed for the move that Kenyans termed uneconomical.

President Kenyatta is in China for a three-day state visit.

He is expected to attend the Second Belt and Road Forum (BRF) for International Cooperation that will be officially opened by Xi Jinping on Friday.
