    Siblings

Alexei has three siblings, two sisters, Sonia and Anna, and a younger brother, Anthony.

Both Sonia and Anthony are involved in tennis, with Sonia pursuing her career in the WTA circuit, while Anthony faced setbacks due to injuries but still plays at a lower level.

The Popyrin family shares a deep connection to the sport, traveling together for tournaments during their childhood.

    Early career

Popyrin began his journey in tennis at a very young age, starting to play at just four years old.

His early training took place at the Kim Warwick Tennis Academy in Sydney, Australia, where he developed his skills and passion for the sport.

As a junior player, Popyrin quickly distinguished himself by competing in various tournaments and achieving significant success.

One of the highlights of his junior career came in 2017 when he won the prestigious French Open boys’ singles title.

This victory was particularly noteworthy as he became the first Australian to win this title since 1968, establishing himself as a rising star in Australian tennis.

    Professional career

In 2017, Popyrin made the transition to professional tennis.

He turned pro and began competing on the ITF Futures circuit, where he gained valuable experience and began building his ranking.

That same year, he claimed his first ITF title in July, marking an important milestone in his early professional career.

Popyrin made his ATP Tour debut in 2018, participating in several tournaments, including qualifying for his first Grand Slam event at the Australian Open.

Later that year, he won his first ATP Challenger title in Traralgon, Australia, which further boosted his confidence and ranking.

Over the next few years, Popyrin continued to improve his game and gain experience on the ATP Tour.

During the 2020 and 2021 seasons, he achieved notable wins against higher-ranked players and consistently reached the later rounds of various tournaments.

His hard work paid off significantly in 2024 when he had a breakout year, winning three ATP singles titles, including a Masters 1000 title at the Montreal Open.

This victory marked a significant milestone in his career and propelled him into the top 25 of the ATP rankings.

Popyrin is ranked No. 24 in the world. His rise through the ranks reflects his dedication to tennis and his ability to compete at high levels.

    Accolades

Notably, Popyrin became the first Australian to win an ATP Masters 1000 singles title in 21 years by triumphing at the 2024 Canadian Open, where he defeated world No. 8 Andrey Rublev in the final.

This victory marked a major milestone, as he became only the fourth Australian to win an ATP Masters title, joining legends like Lleyton Hewitt and Pat Rafter12.

In addition to his Masters title, Popyrin made headlines at the 2024 US Open by defeating 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in a stunning upset during the third round.

This victory was pivotal, as it marked his first time advancing past the third round at this Grand Slam event.
