Kenya’s leading mobile network operator has changed its name from Safaricom Limited to Safaricom Public Limited Company (PLC). The announcement was made on Wednesday, February 28. The notice states that the change took effect on 31 January, 2018. The company’s shareholders approved the name change during the Annual General Meeting held on September 15, 2017. “All contractual relationships and obligations that the company has with its customers, partners and other stakeholders are not affected by this change of name,” the notice read in part. A Kenyan national was arrested in Ghana trying to smuggle cocaine worth at least Sh9 million on January 9. Ivy Mugure Daniels was apprehended by Ghana’s Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) at the Kotoka International Airport with a big parcel wrapped with a black polythene material containing an off-white powdery substance, the local media reports. A vote recount for Embakasi East constituency has confirmed that Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino won the MP seat. After the recount as ordered by Justice Joseph Sergon, Babu beat his opponent Francis Mureithi by 4,316 votes. Babu won the seat with 46,587 votes only for the votes to increase to 46,817 after scrutiny. Mureithi has after the recount garnered 42,501 up from 42,253. A Tanzanian court has sentenced to five months in jail a politician and a member of parliament for using abusive language against President John Magufuli. At least 37 people were killed by police and armed gangs during and after the repeat presidential polls, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) has revealed in its latest report. The report indicates that the police were responsible for at least 23 deaths while the gangs, claimed 14 lives. According to the report, most of the people were opposition supporters. The government has almost doubled passport fees for Kenyans living abroad. Those living in the Caribbean countries, together with those in the United States of America will be expected to pay the highest fees. For a 32 page passport, they will part with Sh8,000, Sh11,000 for 48 page and Sh14,000 for a 64 page passport. Before the changes were signed by Interior CS, Fred Matiang’i, the passports went for Sh4,500 for 32 page, Sh6,000 for 48 page while a 64 page passport went for Sh7,500.
