Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)  has collected Sh10 billion from landlords. The law that requires them to pay taxes on earnings was introduced by the Finance Act 2015 but was enforced in January 2016. The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) said on Tuesday it has on board 52,000 landlords — slightly over 50 per cent of the targeted 100,000. Standard Chartered Bank has recorded a 20.5 per cent drop in its profits for the first quarter of the year 2017. It’s net earnings in the period stood at Sh. 2 billion compared to Sh. 2.5 billion a year earlier. Fees on transactions fell 10.1 per cent to Sh. 2.1 billion while operating expenses rose 5.7 per cent to Sh. 3.7 billion. The bank’s interest expenses also jumped 11.8 per cent to Sh. 1.7 billion, reflecting an 11 per cent increase in deposits to Sh. 205 billion. Isaac Rutto, NASA co-principal, has claimed that he had been picked to be the Nasa presidential flag bearer but declined the offer,instead leaving it to ODM leader Raila Odinga. Enoch Onsanze,  uncle to the three children of Kapsoya ward MCA aspirant, James Ratemo, was arrested and charged with abduction. Enoch was on Tuesday arraigned in court but the case has been delayed on the request of State Counsel Zachary Omwenga who urged an Eldoret court to give them more time to amend the charges. At least 22 people were killed and 59 wounded in an explosion at the end of a concert by U.S. singer Ariana Grande in the English city of Manchester on Monday, in what two U.S. officials said was a suspected suicide bombing. Co-operative Bank has bagged two prestigious banking awards in the Banker Africa East Africa awards 2017. The bank won the best bank in Kenya award in the Diaspora Offering. Co-op Bank further won the the most Social Responsible Bank through its Co-op Bank Foundation. In April 2016, the bank launched a 24-hour service centre dedicated to handling banking needs of diaspora customers. The one-stop shop, named Diaspora Banking Centre, sought to boost the amount of money Kenyans living abroad bring into the country. 10,000 teachers have been promoted following interviews conducted in the months of March and April. The effective date for promotion is May 3, according to a statement issued by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). Letters for the successful applicants will be released to the TSC county directors starting Monday for onward transmission to the teachers. “It is anticipated that all letters will have been dispatched in two weeks’ time,” TSC’s head of communication Kihumba Kamotho said.
