Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko got a temporary reprieve after the Tax Appeals Tribunal ordered the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to immediately lift agency notices freezing his bank accounts. The ruling directed KRA to remove the agency notices placed on Sonko’s accounts at Equity Bank and Co-operative Bank, pending the determination of his appeal in an ongoing tax dispute. The Tribunal, chaired by Dr. Rodney Oluoch, held that the taxes in question remain disputed and are therefore not collectable at this stage under Section 52(2) of the Tax Procedures Act. “The taxes subject to the said agency notices are disputed…

Germany’s parliament, the Bundestag, has voted to introduce voluntary military service, in a move aimed at boosting national defences after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It marks a significant shift in Germany’s approach to its military and follows Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s push to create Europe’s strongest conventional army. The change means that all 18-year-olds in Germany will be sent a questionnaire from January 2026 asking if they are interested and willing to join the armed forces. The form will be mandatory for men and voluntary for women. Students at schools across Germany have said they will join strikes in as…
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow is ready to provide “uninterrupted shipments” of fuel to India, as Delhi faces pressure from the US to stop buying Russian oil. Putin, speaking alongside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi, questioned earlier why India should be punished for buying oil when the US itself buys nuclear fuel from Moscow. President Donald Trump has imposed 50% tariffs on most Indian products, arguing that Delhi’s continued purchases of Russian oil helped fund the war in Ukraine – an accusation India denies. Putin’s visit comes as the US holds a series of talks with Russia…

A federal grand jury in Virginia has declined to indict New York Attorney General Letitia James, days after a judge dismissed the earlier case against her. It marks another blow to Trump’s efforts to prosecute those he considers political adversaries, which also includes ex-FBI Director James Comey. Last month, a judge dismissed the federal cases against James and Comey after finding the prosecutor appointed by Trump was not in the post legally. James, who had successfully brought charges against President Donald Trump before he won re-election, had said the federal case alleging she committed bank fraud and made false statements…

In an apparent 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court said in its “preliminary evaluation of this case”, Texas satisfied the conditions for emergency relief and that the lower…
