Police in Kisii County have launched investigations into the murder of a 62-year-old man who was found unconscious with serious head injuries near Kisii State Lodge.

The incident was reported on Friday morning after family members received information from members of the public about a man lying by the roadside in the Kiamabundu area within Kitutu Central Sub-County.

The victim was identified as Julius Nyabuto Opande, 62.

His brother told police that he rushed to the scene and found Opande unconscious and bleeding from the right ear. He immediately took him to Christamarianne Hospital where he received first aid before being referred to Chiron Hospital for specialised treatment due to the severity of his injuries.

However, while undergoing treatment at Chiron Hospital, Opande succumbed to the injuries at around 4:30pm on the same day.

Detectives and crime scene investigators from the Kisii County CSI unit visited and documented the scene.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased sustained severe head injuries and was unconscious when he was rescued.

The body was moved to the hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination as investigations continue.

Such murder incidents have been on the rise in the area amid efforts to solve them. Most targeted victims are suspected criminals, police say.

Those behind the same are believed to be vigilante groups operating in the area and indicating locals are slowly not trusting the police.

Police at least one such case is reported weekly in the area in a worrying trend amid efforts to solve them.
