Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu ignited debate in the Senate after publicly rejecting a directive by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) requiring counties to construct official residences for governors. Irungu raised the objection on Wednesday while appearing before the Senate County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC) at Parliament Buildings to defend Laikipia County’s revenue and expenditure accounts for the 2024/25 financial year. He argued that the directive was economically impractical and morally indefensible, particularly for rural counties grappling with basic service delivery challenges. The SRC circular sets a ceiling of Sh50 million for the construction of a governor’s residence. However, Irungu…
Three suspected poachers were arrested with 42 kilos of elephant tusks valued at Sh4.2 million in Lokichar, Turkana County. The joint operation by police and the Kenya Wildlife Service also recovered three leopard and three python skins. Police said they also recovered a motorcycle that was used to transport the trophies. That is nearly twice the $72bn Meta spent last year on AI projects and infrastructure. In the last three years, the technology giant has spent roughly $140bn in an attempt to get ahead of the AI boom. Zuckerberg…
Parcel delivery giant UPS says it will cut up to 30,000 jobs this year as it further reduces shipments for its biggest customer, Amazon. The world’s largest package delivery company has been scaling back deliveries for the online retail giant, which it says are “extraordinarily dilutive” to its profit margins. UPS says the job cuts would be made through buyout offers to full-time drivers and by not replacing staff who leave the company voluntarily. At the same time, it reported earnings of $24.5bn (£17.7bn) for the final three months of last year. It also forecast a surprise increase in revenue…
The US Federal Reserve has voted to hold interest rates as its chair, Jerome Powell, defended the importance of central bank independence. The Fed said it will keep its key lending rate between 3.5% to 3.75%, stating that economic activity in the US “has been expanding at a solid pace”. US President Donald Trump has frequently criticised Powell for not cutting rates quickly enough. Federal prosecutors recently opened a criminal investigation over testimony Powell gave to the Senate about renovations to Fed buildings. On Wednesday, Powell declined to comment on the probe but he said that if a central bank…
The FBI raided a Georgia election office on Wednesday as it examined allegations of voter fraud in the 2020 US election. In a statement to Reuters, the FBI said it was conducting a “court-authorised law enforcement activity” at the Fulton County Election Hub. Fulton County officials said that the government’s warrant “sought a number of records related to 2020 elections”. Donald Trump lost the state and the county – the most populated in Georgia – to Joe Biden in the 2020 election and has long said his loss was due to fraud, a claim that is unsubstantiated. The Department of…
Google unveiled an artificial intelligence tool Wednesday that its scientists said would help unravel the mysteries of the human genome — and could one day lead to new treatments for diseases. The deep learning model AlphaGenome was hailed by outside researchers as a “breakthrough” that would let scientists study and even simulate the roots of difficult-to-treat genetic diseases. While the first complete map of the human genome in 2003 “gave us the book of life, reading it remained a challenge”, Pushmeet Kohli, vice president of research at Google DeepMind, told journalists. “We have the text,” he said, which is a…

Several lawmakers also visited the facility on Wednesday, speaking out against the father and son’s detention, and urging the Trump administration to release them. The Department of Homeland Security has said the pair entered the US illegally, while a…
