For many Kenyans, mobile connectivity is an indispensable part of daily life. But in the remote expanses of northern Kenya, the simple act of making a phone call or accessing mobile money has long required extraordinary effort—long walks in search of a signal or climbing hills to catch a faint network bar. The landscape is now shifting. Expanded telecom coverage, largely powered by the Universal Service Fund (USF), is beginning to ease long-standing isolation in counties such as Marsabit, Turkana, Baringo, and West Pokot. The initiative is redefining how residents interact with government services, conduct business and safeguard their communities.…

In a statement released, Matiang’i commended all candidates who vied for positions, but singled out opposition winners for praise, describing their victories as a reflection of “the deep confidence that the people of Kenya have in leaders who believe in public service and change.” Among those he congratulated were Douglas Masikonde (Narok Town Ward, DCP), Anthony Kyalo (Mumbuni North Ward, Wiper Patriotic Front), David Wanyoike (Kariobangi…
The High Court declared that Parliament cannot impose timelines on the National Land Commission (NLC) in the execution of its mandate to investigate and recommend redress for historical land injustices. This followed a petition filed by activist and Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah. The court found that the National Land Commission (Amendment), which sought to restrict the NLC’s determinations to one year and the implementation of remedies to three years, is unconstitutional. “It was not for Parliament to limit the period. This is to undermine the mandate of a constitutional body when the Constitution itself does not set timelines,” court ruled.…

For years, Sabarei — a remote sub-location in Marsabit’s Dukana sub-county — operated in near isolation. The area, nearly 900 kilometres from Nairobi and just five kilometres from the Ethiopian border, endured frequent bandit attacks and had no mobile network. Security officers and local administrators relied on runners to deliver critical messages to a centre almost 100 kilometres away. At the heart of Sabarei sits a decades-old police outpost and the home and office of Assistant Chief Gufu Habane. Together, a small group of officers and administrators has long served as the first line of defense for communities living in…
