A South African court has ordered an anti-migrant group to stop blocking foreign nationals from accessing public health facilities and schools, saying such actions are illegal. Operation Dudula has been picketing hospitals and clinics in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, checking identity cards and stopping anyone who is not South African from entering. This has since extended to schools. But the high court in Johannesburg has ordered the group to stop “intimidating, harassing [or] interfering with access” to these facilities, following a case brought by rights groups. South Africa is home to about 2.4 million migrants, just less than 4% of…
What may be the biggest battle yet in Donald Trump’s trade war is getting under way. The US Supreme Court is hearing arguments over the legality of the Trump administration’s tariffs, as a number of small businesses and a group of states contend most of them are illegal and should be struck down. If the court agrees with them, Trump’s trade strategy would be upended, including the sweeping global tariffs he first announced in April. The government would also likely have to refund some of the billions of dollars it has collected through the tariffs, which are taxes on imports.…
Donald Trump renominated billionaire investor Jared Isaacman to run Nasa, five months after withdrawing his first nomination. The 42-year-old entrepreneur, who has ties to SpaceX founder Elon Musk, had looked set to lead the space agency when Trump abruptly pulled his nomination in late May, following what the president said was a “thorough review of prior associations.” While the White House did not specify what those associations were, it was during Trump’s high-profile feud with Musk. Isaacman, who is worth an estimated $1.9bn (£1.46bn), is an amateur jet pilot and also became the first non-professional astronaut to walk in space…
Two different US courts have stayed the deportation of an Indian-origin man who spent more than 40 years in prison for a murder he did not commit. Subramanyam “Subu” Vedam, 64, who was convicted of murdering his former roommate in 1983, was exonerated in October after new evidence surfaced in the case. But immediately after his release from prison, he was taken into custody by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), who want to deport him to India. Mr Vedam’s family says that even though he was born in India, he moved to the US when he was nine months…
The Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (KSPCA) announced it must relocate its Mombasa shelter and clinic by the end of December 2025. This is after being directed by Bamburi Cement Ltd to vacate the Nyali premises it has occupied for more than 40 years. The shelter — the region’s oldest animal welfare facility — currently cares for around 250 animals and provides services including rescue, treatment, rehoming, vaccinations, humane population control, and cruelty investigations. “This news came as a shock to us and to the Mombasa community that has supported our work for decades,” said Emma…
Four people have been detained after Portuguese authorities intercepted a narco-sub carrying more than 1.7 tonnes of cocaine in the mid-Atlantic. The semi-submersible vessel was bound for the Iberian peninsula and was seized in recent days, according to officials. Footage shows the police and navy surrounding the vessel before boarding, seizing the Class A substance and arresting four crew members, who are said to be from South America. The suspects, including two Ecuadorians, a Venezuelan and a Colombian, were remanded in pre-trial custody after their court appearance in the Azores on Tuesday, said police. Vítor Ananias, head of Portugal’s police…

The Maldives has banned young people born on or after 1 January 2007 from smoking tobacco, becoming the only country in the world to enforce a nationwide generational tobacco prohibition. The archipelago’s health ministry announced on Saturday that it would be illegal for younger generations to use, buy or sell tobacco within the country. The ban “reflects the government’s strong commitment to protecting young people from the harms of tobacco”, the ministry said. Ahmed Afaal, vice chair of the archipelago’s tobacco control board, told BBC World Service’s Newshour programme that the country’s general vaping ban last year had been a…
The High Court ordered the County Government of Kiambu not to pay a balance of Sh166,295,500 to Filtronic International Limited, a company accused of fraudulently securing a multi-million-shilling tender for the development and installation of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. In interim orders issued on October 31, 2025, the court certified as urgent an application by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) seeking to restrain payment of the funds, which represent the remaining portion of a Sh230 million contract. The injunction will remain in force for 14 days, pending further hearing of the case on November 13, 2025. The…
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) announced that the just-concluded elections in Tanzania were flawed. In a statement on Monday, the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) said that a delegation sent to Tanzania since the pre-election period observed a myriad of anomalies that impeded a smooth electoral process. The observers experienced challenges in consulting with key stakeholders, particularly the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as they had not been issued with introduction letters together with accreditation identification cards as required by the law. Some were subjected to interrogation by the security forces and their official documents, including their passports, were…
