Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has signed deportation orders against 17 foreigners who are directors of gambling firms in the country. This follows a crackdown on betting firms in the country. According to reports, the deportees violated work permits engaging in business not stated on the application. “Some of them came into the country as tourists, while others came with visas not related to doing business, but they have changed and are now engaged in betting,” a source intimated to a local daily. The government has adopted new regulations that have given power to private security guards to carry guns and make arrests. According to reports by The Standard, the regulations were gazetted on Friday by Interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i. Under the new regulations, the guards have also been empowered to take formal police jobs, quell riots and providing security during elections. In performing these duties, the guards, just like the police and emergency service providers, will be allowed to ride in armoured and rapid response vehicles. A police officer in Kilifi County died on Sunday morning after turning a gun on himself over a suspected domestic row. According to reports, the officer, Constable Kelvin Kipkemoi attached to Kizurini Police station in Kaloleni, shot himself at around 5:30am after his night shift duty. Consumers who rely on petrol for their day to day activities will continue to dig dipper into their pockets after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced an increment in its prices on Sunday. In the July review, the prices of super petrol increase by Ksh0.29 per litre while diesel and kerosene decreased by Ksh0.88 and Ksh2.31 per litre respectively. Following the review, super petrol will trade at Ksh115.39 with diesel retailing at Ksh103.88 and kerosene at Ksh101.97 per litre in Nairobi. The new prices will be effective at midnight.
