India’s Bharti Airtel is set to Warid Telecom Uganda after entering an agreement with Warid Group. After this acquisition, Airtel Uganda will strengthen its position as the second largest mobile operators in  Uganda with around 7.5 million subscribers and 40% market share after MTN. The agreement is subject to approvals from relevant state authorities.

Bharti Airtel Uganda has around 4.6 million subscribers while Warid Telecom has 2.9 million.

Regarding the agreement, Manoj Kohli, MD and CEO (International), Bharti Airtel said, “This happens to be the first in-market acquisition in Bharti Airtel’s history. We believe this market consolidation offers great synergies by bringing together the best of Airtel and Warid to better serve customers in Uganda.”
