Billy Rovzar, born Guillermo Fernando Rovzar Diez Barroso on October 10, 1976, in Mexico City, Mexico, is a prominent figure in the Mexican entertainment industry.
As a seasoned producer, writer, and occasional actor, he has made significant contributions to film, television, and theater over more than two decades.
Hailing from a family with deep roots in media, Rovzar is part of the Azcárraga media legacy, being a great-grandson of Emilio Azcárraga Vidaurreta, the founder of Televisa, Mexico’s largest media conglomerate.
Currently in his late forties, Rovzar balances his professional achievements with a personal life that includes marriages to actress Sara Maldonado from 2007 to 2011 and reality TV personality Fernanda Gamboa from 2000 to 2005, with whom he shares two children.
Since 2011, he has been in a long-term relationship with actress Claudia Álvarez, with whom he welcomed twins in recent years.
Siblings
Billy has one sibling, his brother, Fernando Rovzar.
Fernando, a Boston University alumnus, mirrors Billy’s trajectory as a producer and executive, and the two have collaborated extensively since the early 2000s.
Their partnership extends beyond business, rooted in their shared upbringing in Mexico City’s elite media circles, where family discussions likely revolved around the intricacies of content creation and distribution.
Career
Rovzar’s professional journey began in earnest in 2003 when, alongside his brother Fernando, Alejandro Lozano, and Erica Sánchez, he co-founded Lemon Films—a production company that would later evolve into the expansive Lemon Studios in 2018.
This venture marked his entry into independent filmmaking, focusing initially on revitalizing Mexican cinema with bold, genre-defying narratives.

Early successes included the cult comedy Killing Cabos in 2004, a satirical take on crime and chaos that resonated with domestic audiences and set the tone for Rovzar’s affinity for high-stakes storytelling.
The company quickly diversified, producing over 25 films and venturing into television, theater, and even video games.
Notable cinematic works under his banner include the horror revival Km 31 (2006), which blended supernatural elements with cultural folklore, and the critically acclaimed After Lucia (2012), a raw exploration of trauma that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
On the television front, Rovzar executive produced the dark thriller series Sr. Ávila (2013–2018), a gritty tale of an unlikely hitman that earned international distribution on platforms like Netflix.
More recently, he has helmed projects like the Netflix drama Monarca (2019–2021), delving into corporate intrigue within a tequila empire, and the Apple TV+ crime series Las Azules (announced in 2022), showcasing his ability to secure high-profile streaming deals.
Beyond Lemon Studios, Rovzar has invested in Nala Films, partnering with Emilio Diez Barroso to co-produce Hollywood crossovers such as Casa de Mi Padre (2012) starring Will Ferrell and 6 Souls (2010) with Julianne Moore.
Accolades
One of the pinnacle achievements came with Sr. Ávila, the fourth season of which secured an International Emmy Award for Best Non-English Language Series in 2017, making Lemon Studios the first Mexican production company to claim this honor and highlighting Rovzar’s prowess in serialized drama.
His film After Lucia, produced in 2012, received widespread praise, including the Caméra d’Or nomination at Cannes and the Un Certain Regard Prize, cementing its status as a poignant critique of youth and violence.
Earlier, Killing Cabos not only became a box-office hit but also earned Ariel Award nominations, Mexico’s equivalent of the Oscars, for its innovative humor and ensemble cast.
Km 31 further bolstered his reputation by getting selected for the Sundance Film Festival in 2007, where it was lauded for breathing new life into the Mexican horror genre and achieving commercial success with sequels like Km 31-2 in 2016.
