A 12-year-old boy died while another narrowly survived after a pile of sand collapsed on them while they were harvesting sand in Luanda Sub-county, Vihiga County.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, June 2, at Ebusiralo Sub-location.
According to police, the incident was reported by a parent who told police that her two sons, 15 and 12, were harvesting sand at the homestead of a resident, Lucy Awinja, at around 3:20 p.m. when a heap of sand suddenly gave way and buried them.
The two juveniles were completely covered by the collapsing sand, leading to suffocation.
Members of the public rushed to the scene and managed to rescue the boys before taking them to Kima Mission Hospital for treatment.
However, the younger one was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. His elder brother received treatment and was later discharged in fair condition.
Police officers from Luanda Police Station and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) visited and documented the scene as investigations commenced.
The body of the deceased was moved to Kima Mission Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a postmortem examination.
The incident highlights the dangers associated with sand harvesting, particularly in unsecured excavation sites where collapses can occur without warning.
And A 45-year-old man died after he was allegedly stabbed by his wife during a domestic dispute in Mt Elgon Sub-county, Bungoma County.
According to police, the incident occurred on the evening of Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at around 8:30 p.m.
Police said the deceased, identified as Robert Sikuku Chepkombe, was involved in a disagreement with his wife at their home when the confrontation reportedly escalated into a physical fight.
The incident came to light after the woman allegedly sent her children to inform a neighbour about what had transpired.
The neighbour alerted other residents, who responded and rushed the injured man to Mt Elgon Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
However, Chepkombe succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention.
Investigators later visited the scene of the incident, where they recovered a blood-stained kitchen knife with a black handle believed to have been used in the attack.
The suspect was arrested and placed in police custody to assist with investigations.
The body of the deceased was moved to Kimilili Sannte Mortuary, where it is awaiting a postmortem examination as detectives continue with inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
