The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has criticized the Nairobi County Government for causing internet disruptions in the city, warning that such actions could negatively impact businesses and Kenya’s digital economy.
In a statement on Tuesday, February 25, the CA said it had begun engaging the county government to resolve the issue, which has led to significant disruptions for businesses and residents.
The Authority emphasized that fibre optic networks are crucial to Kenya’s digital infrastructure and any interference must adhere to established legal and regulatory frameworks.
“While we respect the devolved functions of county governments, including their role in managing land use, ICT infrastructure falls under national oversight as per the Constitution and the Kenya Information and Communications Act (KICA),” the statement read.
The regulator revealed that preliminary investigations indicated that Nairobi County’s actions were linked to a dispute over wayleave fees and alleged non-compliance by Kenya Power regarding the use of public infrastructure. However, the CA urged both parties to exercise restraint and prioritize public interest in resolving the matter.
Kenya Power and Nairobi County were also urged to seek an amicable solution, with the CA warning that any unilateral actions undermining internet connectivity should cease immediately. The Authority further called on all county governments and public utilities to consult with it before implementing measures that affect licensed telecommunications networks.
Businesses and consumers affected by the internet disruption were advised to contact their service providers for updates and support.
“We remain committed to safeguarding the integrity of Kenya’s ICT ecosystem and will provide further updates as the situation develops,” the CA stated.
