A candidate seeking to be the new chairman of National Police Service Commission (NPSC) collapsed and died as he waited to be interviewed by a panel in Nairobi.

Komora Mubadi Jilo was among four who were to be interviewed by the Selection Panel for nominees of the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) when he collapsed at the Public Service Commission offices along Harambee Avenue.

It is not clear what caused the death. This briefly disrupted the interviews that were ongoing on Tuesday March 25.

His family was later informed of the tragedy.

The interview panel is yet to comment on the incident.

He had unsuccessfully run for the Garsen MP in 2022 on PAA ticket.

The panel had unveiled the final list of candidates to be interviewed for the position of the chairperson and members.

The panel shortlisted nine candidates for the chairperson and 29 others for the membership post.

Former Busia Deputy Governor Kizito Wangalwa, ex-IEBC commissioner Margaret Mwachanya, former IPOA member Doreen Nkatha, former PS Micah Powon and ex-MP Humphrey Kimani.

Others are John Mutegi, Komora Mubadi Jilo, Susan Oyatsi and John Otieno.

The week-long interviews commenced March 24 with those of the chairperson ending Tuesday.

Among the notable figures on the list of candidates for the member are former police spokesperson Eric Kiraithe, former PS Colleta Suda, former Nairobi traffic boss Michael Barasa, former Bomet police commander Esther Seroney, former NYS DG Matilda Sakwa and NPS Director Gender and Children Affairs Jostice Barmao.

Others are Peris Muthoni, Rose Mumbua, Areba Omwoyo, Adan Abdullahi, Isaac Ole Shaasha and Patrick Wakaba.

The outgoing commission was appointed in March 2019 for a six-year non-renewable term.

Members of the commission leaving are Eliud Kinuthia (chairman), Dr Alice Otwala (vice-chairperson), John ole Moyaki, Eusebius Laibuta, Lilian Kiamba and Edwin Cheluget.

“The candidates should be at the venue at least twenty minutes before the starting time,” said the Panel’s chairperson, Arthur Osiya.

Among the documents required are clearances from the Kenya Revenue Authority, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, Higher Education Loans Board, any of the Registered Credit Reference Bureaus and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

The public was also asked to provide any credible information of interest relating to any of the shortlisted candidates through affidavits before March 20.

The former commissioners, led by chairperson Eliud Kinuthi, exited office after the expiry of their six-year term.

The main functions of the commission include recruiting and appointing persons to hold or act in the office of the police service, confirming appointments, and determining promotions and transfers within the National Police Service.

They also observe due process, exercise disciplinary control over, and remove persons holding or acting in offices within the service.
