Chelsea FC legend Bobby Tambling has died at the age of 84, marking the passing of one of the club’s most prolific early-era goalscorers.

Tambling, who held Chelsea’s all-time scoring record for 45 years with 202 goals, remained the club’s top scorer until Frank Lampard surpassed his tally in 2013.

A key figure in Chelsea’s history during the 1960s, Tambling helped the club secure the 1965 League Cup and also featured for Crystal Palace during his professional career. He earned three international caps for England, scoring once in a match against France.

Tambling made an immediate impact at Stamford Bridge, scoring on his debut at just 17 years old in 1959. Over the course of his Chelsea career, he made 370 appearances for the Blues and played in the 1967 FA Cup final, where Chelsea were defeated by Tottenham Hotspur.

After leaving English football, Tambling continued his career in Ireland, where he later moved into management with Cork Celtic and Cork City. He eventually settled in Cork, where he lived until his death.

In 2013, after breaking Tambling’s long-standing club scoring record, Lampard paid tribute to the former striker, describing him as “an absolute gentleman” and praising his support and sportsmanship.

“Bobby and his wife have been a huge support to me throughout… Bobby’s an absolute gentleman,” Lampard said at the time. “I couldn’t have beaten a better man.”
