Born on January 5, 1959, in Urbana, Ohio, Brown comes from a prominent political and publishing family.

    Siblings

Clancy had an older sister named Elizabeth Ellen Brown, who was born around 1957 and tragically died in 1964 from leukemia at a young age.

This loss has influenced his family’s philanthropic efforts, including support for pediatric healthcare causes in her honor.

His upbringing was shaped by his parents, mother Joyce Helen, a conductor, composer, and concert pianist, and father Clarence J. “Bud” Brown Jr., a newspaper publisher and longtime U.S. Congressman.

    Career

Brown began his acting journey in Chicago theater before making his film debut in 1983’s Bad Boys, where he played a bully opposite Sean Penn.

Other notable film appearances include The Bride, Pet Sematary II, Cowboys & Aliens, and Thor: Ragnarok (as the voice of Surtur).

On television, Brown starred as Brother Justin Crowe in the HBO series Carnivàle and has appeared in shows like The Crown (as Lyndon B. Johnson), Lost, and many more.

His voice acting career is equally impressive, with long-running roles as Mr. Krabs in SpongeBob SquarePants since 1999, Lex Luthor in DC animated projects, and contributions to Star Wars: The Clone Wars, among dozens of animated series, video games, and films.

    Accolades

Brown won a Fangoria Chainsaw Award for Best Supporting Performance for The Mortuary Collection (2021) and an Indiana Film Journalists Association Award for Best Ensemble Acting for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018).
