A police officer was shot and killed by his colleagues in what police termed as a case of mistaken identity in Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County.

Constable Hassan Lolkidid was shot and killed at a scene he and five other officers had responded to on Wednesday dawn.

He was in the company of five other colleagues and had responded to a scene they claimed a suspicious group was offloading tyres.

This was at about 1 am, police said. The route is common with stealing of transit goods, police said.

While at the scene, the said off loaders escaped prompting the police officers to open fire.

It was then the officers realized constable Lolkidid lying in a pool of blood having been shot.

Lolkidid had suffered a gunshot wound in the chest and succumbed to the injuries at the scene, police said.

All officers have denied discharge of their firearms and their weapons were confiscated for ballistic tests.

The said lorry was towed to the station yard pending investigations, police said adding the body of the officer was taken to the mortuary pending autopsy.

After the ballistic tests were done, the four police officers were arrested after it emerged they were all involved in the shooting and were covering up the murder of the deceased officer.

Police said the four would be arraigned with murder.

And a police officer was stabbed and seriously injured during an operation to arrest a notorious house breaker in Gilgil, Nakuru County.

A team of police had responded to the area after being informed the wanted suspect was there and managed to arrest him.

The suspect then suddenly drew a knife from his gumboots and stabbed one of the police officers on his left groin before escaping.

The police officer was rushed to Gilgil Sub County hospital for treatment and admitted at the same facility for observation in stable condition, police said.

The hunt on the suspect is ongoing following the Thursday drama.
