kenya powerThe High Court on Friday blocked Kenya Power from billing its clients with inflated bills to recover Sh8.1 billion ‘contained in their annual report and financial statements for the year ending June 30, 2017 until January 30, 2018.

Lawyer Apollo Mboya and Electricity Consumers Society on Thursday filed a class action suit against the company, where he sought to have them stopped from disconnecting electricity based on the backdated bills.

“The court should issue an order directing the company to refund consumers payments made in excess of actual meter readings, on account of the said recovery as contained in its financial estimates.”

Justice Chacha Mwita issued temporary orders that will remain until the matter is heard and determined on January 30.

Customers want the court to declare that the company infringed on their rights by falsifying electricity tariffs and bills.

In a leaked email, Kenya Power admitted to overcharging its clients but only because the company ‘migrated to a new customer management system’ in November 2017.

”We have realized that there have been errors in the conversion to the new system and that some bills which have been sent out reflect an amount due in excess of what should have been charged.”
