The government has deployed police and military helicopters carrying medical teams and Red Cross officers to help with search and rescue efforts in Elgeyo Marakwet County, where the death toll from mudslides has risen to 13.

Rescue teams are still moving through affected villages in the Chesongoch area, where the landslides were reported early Saturday.

Area police commander Zablon Okoyo confirmed that about ten bodies have been found so far, while several people are still missing.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, in a statement on Saturday, expressed his condolences to the affected families and promised government support.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Endo, Sambirir, and Embobut Wards in Marakwet East Constituency following the devastating landslide that has led to the loss of lives and property, as well as the destruction of infrastructure, including the road network,” Murkomen said.

He added that the government is working with the county administration and humanitarian organizations to provide assistance to families in need.

“The Government has dispatched police and military helicopters carrying medical personnel and Red Cross staff to assist in the ongoing search and rescue operations. Efforts are also underway to restore the destroyed road network to allow emergency teams to reach the affected areas,” he stated.

Local leaders are urging residents in high-risk zones to move to safer ground as heavy rains continue in the region.
